The Tisza River is once again witnessing the annual mayfly “dance”, a brief but spectacular natural event that turns the water’s surface into a shifting, living cloud. While this remarkable natural phenomenon attracts many nature enthusiasts, authorities are issuing strong warnings against any disturbance or illegal collection, with offenders facing significant penalties.
The event typically lasts only a few days, yet it transforms the river into a striking white-brown ribbon. This period, known locally as the “Tisza blooming,” marks the mayflies’ mating season. What may appear to observers as a serene natural spectacle is, for the insects, an intense and time-critical reproductive phase.
A statement published on police.hu by the Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok County Police Headquarters on Tuesday warned that strict protective regulations are in effect during this period.
The Tisza mayfly (Palingenia longicauda) is the largest mayfly species in Europe. Its life cycle is highly asymmetric. The larvae spend up to three years living in burrows within the riverbed sediment, where they develop in relative isolation. After this extended development phase, they emerge to the water’s surface for a single day, undergo their final molt, mate in flight, and die shortly thereafter. Their sole function during this brief adult stage is reproduction and the continuation of the species.
These insects are highly sensitive to pollution and water quality degradation.
Their continued presence in the Tisza River is an indicator of the river’s relatively healthy ecological condition. In most rivers across Western and Central Europe, the species has already disappeared entirely. Today, its distribution is largely limited to the Tisza and select tributaries, including the Körös and Bodrog rivers.
However, the species’ vulnerable population remains under threat. Individuals occasionally attempt to collect the insects—often for use as fishing bait—either alive or dead. Authorities emphasize that any form of collection, capture, killing, or intentional disturbance of the swarming is strictly prohibited.
The conservation value of the Tisza mayfly is set at 10,000 forints (approximately 28.12 euros) per specimen. Large-scale collection can therefore result in cumulative damages that meet the threshold of criminal liability. Offenders may face administrative or criminal proceedings.
Special attention this year is being given to river traffic. Authorities have warned boat operators to exercise extreme caution.
Deliberately entering swarms with small motorized vessels not only disrupts the mating process but may also constitute an environmental offense involving damage to protected natural assets.
To safeguard this unique natural heritage, the Tisza water police have increased surveillance efforts. Throughout the swarming period, officers will conduct enhanced patrols on the river, supported by national park rangers, volunteer civil protection water units, and official fisheries inspectors.
Visitors are encouraged to observe this phenomenon from the riverbank, provided they do not interfere with the insects during this brief and critical stage of their life cycle.
