(NewsNation) — The House could take up a Senate-passed bill to reopen the federal government as soon as Wednesday, as severe air traffic control staffing shortages continue to ground and delay thousands of flights nationwide.
Now in its sixth week, the shutdown has strained major sectors. However, after a lengthy stalemate, the Senate voted 60-40 on Monday to pass a legislative package that would extend most current government funding through January and reinstate furloughed federal workers. The measure also funds food assistance and veterans benefits programs through Sept. 30, 2026.
For air travelers, that relief can’t come soon enough.
The Federal Aviation Administration last week mandated a 4% reduction in daily flights, which increased to 6% Tuesday at the nation’s 40 busiest airports. The agency has warned flight reductions could reach 8% by Thursday and 10% by Friday.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy warned those cuts will remain in place until normal staffing levels return.
No significant improvement for travelers is expected before midweek at the earliest, and meaningful relief depends on Congress ending the shutdown and restoring air traffic controllers’ pay.
As of Tuesday morning, FlightAware data showed more than 1,100 cancellations and 500 delays across the United States — fueled by both the shutdown and severe weather nationwide. Monday saw nearly 2,500 cancellations, and there were over 14,000 total disruptions on Sunday.
Senate bill to end shutdown moves to House
Eight senators — seven Democrats and one independent — broke with their colleagues to approve the spending package. The bill now heads to the House, which is set to reconvene for the first time since September.
Notably, the deal does not include formally extending Affordable Care Act subsidies, which served as a focal point for Democrats during the shutdown.
That exclusion has sparked frustration among Democrats, including Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., who called for Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to step down. Schumer voted against the bill.
Democrats who voted in favor, however, remained hopeful about extending the health care tax credits.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune has promised a vote on the issue in the Senate before the end of the year, although it faces an uphill battle for the 60 votes needed to pass.
House Speaker Mike Johnson has not yet committed to bringing the measure forward.
Trump orders air traffic controllers to work
As the shutdown entered its 42nd day, President Donald Trump called on air traffic controllers to return to work — and seemingly offered an incentive.
“All Air Traffic Controllers must get back to work, NOW!!! Anyone who doesn’t will be substantially ‘docked,’” Trump wrote on social media. “For those Air Traffic Controllers who were GREAT PATRIOTS, and didn’t take ANY TIME OFF for the ‘Democrat Shutdown Hoax,’”’ I will be recommending a BONUS of $10,000 per person for distinguished service to our Country.“
Air traffic controllers have been working mandatory overtime throughout the shutdown.
