Elon Musk said on Saturday on social media site X that he believes the EU should be abolished and sovereignty returned to individual countries so that their governments can better represent their people.
According to Breitbart, the billionaire was responding to the European Commission’s decision on Friday to fine X €120 million ($140 million) for alleged violations of the Digital Services Act (DSA). The Brussels regulation aims to curb content deemed hateful, misleading, or harmful to social dialogue.
Relations between the EU and X have been tense since Musk acquired the company in 2022, with Brussels previously objecting to Musk conducting a live interview with then-presidential candidate Donald Trump. Friday’s decision could further deepen tensions between the United States and the European Union.
Prime Minister Viktor Orbán assured Elon Musk of his support on Saturday, writing:
The Commission’s attack on X says it all. When the Brusselian overlords cannot win the debate, they reach for the fines. Europe needs free speech, not unelected bureaucrats deciding what we can read or say. Hats off to Elon Musk for holding the line.”

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the European Commission’s fine was “not only an attack on X, but also an attack on all American tech platforms and the American people by foreign governments.”

Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau also sharply criticized European countries, pointing out that they rely on U.S. military power while, through the EU, “these very countries are attacking” American interests. According to Christopher Landau, the relationship between NATO and the EU has long been contradictory: while member states urge close cooperation within NATO, they often act against American interests “in their capacity as EU members.”
The diplomat listed several areas where he believes EU policy is contrary to U.S. interests, including censorship, climate policy, immigration rules, and the marginalization of national sovereignty.
Musk showed his support to Viktor Orbán by reposting a video on X in which the Hungarian Prime Minister detailed the corruption scandals surrounding EU officials. His caption read: “Abolish the EU!”

Most recently, following the heavy fine imposed on X, the company announced that the European Commission can no longer publish advertisements on the X platform, hirado.hu reported.
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump has warned that Europe is threatened with “civilizational obliteration” as a result of globalist policies—open borders, censorship, and suppression of political opposition. According to the latest U.S. National Security Strategy document, the continent “could become unrecognizable within 20 years” if policies do not change. The White House therefore supports the “growing influence of patriotic European parties.”
