A beluga whale has died at the Shedd Aquarium after being transferred there from the shuttered Marineland aquarium in Ontario, Canada.

It was the third from Marineland to die at the Shedd, and the fourth from Marineland overall.

Osiris, a 26-year-old female beluga of "clinical concern," died Monday, the Shedd announced in a blog post. Her condition had been closely monitored since she arrived at the Shedd in late July, and she had periods of nutritional and social progress, the Shedd said. Osiris struggled to eat consistently, so it was difficult for her to get the nutrients and calories she needed.

"We also saw her commanding personality emerge and become more engaged with the other rescued whales," the Shedd said in the post. "Those were encouraging signs, but nutrition is only one measure of health, and in cases as complex as these, progress is rarely linear."

Osiris' behavior and respiratory patterns changed suddenly Monday morning and her condition declined rapidly, according to the aquarium.

Three other belugas from Marineland died in recent weeks.

At the Shedd, Peekachu, a 23-year-old female, died Aug. 25 and Rain, a 20-year-old female, died Sept. 2. Jelly Bean, another rescued beluga, died at Oceanogràfic Valencia in Spain last week.

Both aquariums are investigating each cause of death.

"When Shedd was asked to help with this rescue, we understood that these animals arrived with significant vulnerabilities and that the outcome for every individual could not be guaranteed," the Shedd said. "That uncertainty does not lessen the heartbreak of Osiris’s loss, or our responsibility to examine it with scientific rigor and open-hearted transparency."

The Shedd also lost a third beluga recently who was not from Marineland. Beethoven, a 34-year-old beluga already living at the Shedd, died Sept. 2.

Osiris, Rain, Jelly Bean and Peekachu were part of a group of 30 belugas evacuated after Marineland closed. The Niagara Falls aquarium had been under criticism for years over unsanitary conditions, and animal rights activists have questioned whether transferring the belugas is safe. Many whales at Marineland were likely sick and air travel could make their illnesses worse, they said.

"The deaths of Peekachu and Rain bring up very serious questions about their health status prior to being transferred to Shedd and the judgement used in that decision,” Lori Marino, co-founder and president of the planned Whale Sanctuary Project in Port Hilford Bay, Nova Scotia, told the Sun-Times after the deaths of the first two belugas who came to the Shedd from Marineland.

Marineland closed due to major financial issues and threatened to euthanize the belugas if they couldn't be moved to a new home.
