Budapest is gearing up for the biggest event in European club football. However, while excitement is building for the UEFA Champions League final at the Puskás Arena, tourists and fans are experiencing sticker shock. Accommodation costs in the Hungarian capital have virtually exploded.
Just under two months before kickoff on May 30, Budapest’s hotel industry is already facing extraordinary conditions. Anyone planning to experience the “four-day football festival” live will have to dig deep into their pockets. Index reports that hotel room prices have in some cases quadrupled compared to a normal May weekend.
Renowned hotels such as the Marriott or the InterContinental, located right on the banks of the Danube, are already fully booked for the final weekend. That demand far exceeds supply is evident from price comparisons.
A room at the InterContinental still available a week before the final for 180,000 forints (475 euros) for two nights is no longer available at any price during the match weekend.
Even simple hostels are now charging between 80,000 and 100,000 forints (211 to 264 euros) for two nights—an amount for which one would normally stay in an upper mid-range hotel.
For the few remaining premium suites, prices range from 1.5 to 3 million forints (3,964 to 7,928 euros).

The Champions League final has long surpassed the Super Bowl in terms of global viewership. For Budapest, hosting it is therefore much more than just a matter of prestige. Experts expect an economic boost of 60 to 80 million euros, most of which will flow directly into the coffers of local service providers.
The organizers’ concept goes far beyond the 90 minutes on the pitch. “We view the Champions League final as a four-day football festival,” explained Péter Marik from the National Event Agency (NRÜ).
For the first time, kickoff has been moved forward to 6:00 p.m., ensuring that the evening does not simply end after the final whistle but continues with celebrations across the entire city.
The centerpiece for fans without tickets will be the fan zone at Heroes’ Square.
Behind the scenes, the Hungarian Football Federation (MLSZ) and state authorities are working closely together. As the federation’s capacities alone are insufficient, a strategic partnership has been formed with the national event agency. “Budapest is ready in terms of infrastructure; we do not need any additional new construction,” emphasized Péter Marik. The focus is now on logistics. Special buses and increased airport transfers are intended to ensure smooth operations. Authorities are already monitoring the fan bases of potential finalists throughout the season. An all-English final, in particular, would significantly raise the security level.
Although it is not yet known which teams will take the field at the Puskás Arena on May 30, one thing is certain: for four days, Budapest will become the center of the football world—at truly “champion-level” prices.
