The success of the BMW iX3 is clearly demonstrated by the fact that more than 50,000 orders were received from European customers in just six months, and the model has also received international recognition, said Hans-Peter Kemser, President and CEO of BMW Group Plant Debrecen (eastern Hungary), at the plant’s international press event on Tuesday.
He added that the model manufactured in Debrecen has laid the foundation for the Neue Klasse, a new vehicle architecture developed exclusively for all-electric vehicles, of which the iX3 is the forerunner. In the future, approximately forty additional models will be launched, and these will be manufactured worldwide.
The Debrecen plant, built according to the iFACTORY concept, represents the future of manufacturing: it is characterized by digitalization, exceptional efficiency, and responsible resource use, the CEO emphasized, noting that they currently produce 30 cars per hour in two shifts, but due to the enormous interest, more shifts will likely be needed. Opened in the fall of 2025, the Debrecen plant is the newest and most modern member of the BMW Group’s global manufacturing network, and at the same time a key driver of the region’s development, contributing not only to manufacturing but also to the creation of a knowledge-based, innovation-driven regional economic ecosystem, as stated at the briefing.
In Debrecen, the BMW Group has built a complete vehicle manufacturing plant covering more than 400 hectares, featuring a press shop, a body shop, a paint shop, an assembly line, and a battery module assembly facility.
The company has invested more than 2 billion euros (820 billion forints) in the site, where it has been producing exclusively all-electric vehicles since 2025. Approximately 150,000 cars are manufactured at the plant annually, according to the press release.
During the all-day event, journalists were shown the most important areas of production, including the press shop, which plays a key role in achieving high productivity, and the body shop, where nearly a thousand robots operate within a fully digitally designed system. The paint shop operates exclusively on electricity from renewable energy sources, thereby significantly reducing CO2e emissions.
BMW representatives also noted that the plant uses no fossil fuels, relying solely on electricity, a quarter of which is generated by a 56-hectare solar panel system, while also utilizing advanced energy recovery systems, photovoltaic power generation, and thermal storage solutions.
The Debrecen plant is the first of five BMW Group factories worldwide to assemble sixth-generation high-voltage batteries on-site, in line with the “local for local” principle. This ensures short transport routes, close integration with vehicle production, and high supply security—representatives noted, adding that by directly linking battery assembly with vehicle production, the Debrecen plant represents a new level of efficiency and innovation in electric vehicle manufacturing.
Hans-Peter Kemser also emphasized that the commitment, dedication, and expertise of their employees are fundamental to success. That is why they place special emphasis on people, training, and long-term partnerships. For example, the University of Debrecen operates a satellite department on the factory premises, and dual training and practice-oriented learning models allow participants to gain real-world industrial experience during their studies, while opening up long-term career opportunities at the company, he emphasized.
At the BMW plant in Debrecen, special attention is also paid to the environment: for example, fruit trees have been planted in the areas between the factory buildings, which employees will harvest together, and yurts have been set up where workers can relax.
