    Czech President Petr Pavel has accepted the resignation of the four-party coalition government led by Petr Fiala. Hungarian politicians have welcomed the victory of Babis’ party, which, alongside Fidesz, is a member of the Patriots for Europe bloc in the European Parliament

    In his short speech, the president gave a positive assessment of the outgoing government’s work, but noted that it had not succeeded in achieving its goals in all areas. Petr Pavel also asked the prime minister to remain in office as acting prime minister until the new government is formed.

    We will do everything we can to ensure that the transfer of power is as quick, smooth, and dignified as possible,”

    Petr Fiala told reporters.

    According to the Czech constitution, the government submits its resignation after the new Chamber of Deputies is formed based on the election results. The new lower house of the Czech parliament was formed on Monday.

    The head of state had previously entrusted Andrej Babis, leader of the ANO party, that won the October elections, with the task of forming a government. The Czech constitution does not set a deadline for the new government to take office.

    Fidesz MP Tamás Menczer reacted to the turnout of events in a Facebook post saying:

    “The failed Czech government has resigned. Andrej Babis ante portas! Viktor Orbán arrives at Trump’s. The future belongs to patriots!”

    The three parties negotiating the formation of the new government, ANO, the Freedom and Direct Democracy (SPD) movement, and the Motorists’ Party, signed a coalition agreement last week and finalized the draft of the government’s program statement. These were also sent to the head of state on Friday, but by email, which is unusual because previously, the politician entrusted with the government formation negotiations always handed them over to the president in person.

    Petr Pavel has summoned Andrej Babis to his residence next Wednesday. The head of state would like to discuss with Andrej Babis the draft program statement of the new government currently being formed, as well as the question of whether Andrej Babis’ roles as a politician and entrepreneur are legally incompatible, the president’s office said on X.
