Overnight storms, with wind gusts near 70 mph, toppled trees into D.C.-area homes and onto roads and left thousands without power. Now, the D.C. region braces for another round of stormy weather with more rain and heavy wind gusts on Friday afternoon.
A cluster of strong thunderstorms moved across the area early Friday morning, bringing gusty winds, lightning, and pockets of heavy rain, leaving lasting damage.
Prince George’s County Public Schools in Maryland announced all schools would be closed Friday due to a large number of schools and offices losing power.
“Downed trees and power lines are also impacting recovery efforts,” the school system said.
Many are waking up without power. More than 10% of Pepco’s customers in Prince George’s County, Maryland, were still experiencing outages as of 5 a.m. Friday. The utility reported more than 25,000 customers without power in Prince George’s and more than 15,000 in the District.
Meanwhile, in Northern Virginia, more than 51,000 Dominion Energy customers were without power, including nearly 22,000 in Fairfax County and almost 19,000 in Arlington.
The storms left behind a lot of debris and toppled trees. In Prince George’s County, a tree fell onto a home on the 300 block of Wren Court in Kettering, trapping one of its residents. Fire crews helped a juvenile male out of the home and took him to a hospital for evaluation, Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department said.

D.C. Fire and EMS evacuated a row house on the 200 block of 8th Street SE after a large tree fell on the roof. No one was hurt, it said.
Two large fallen trees blocked all northbound lanes and one southbound lane on George Washington Memorial Parkway before the Virginia State Route 123 exit, the National Park Service said. On the Baltimore-Washington Parkway, the northbound Maryland State Route 202 exit ramp was blocked by a large tree.
And on Rock Creek Parkway in D.C., a large tree blocked the entire roadway at Ridge Road. Get the latest news on road closures from WTOP Traffic.
Forecast
Friday will be another “active weather day,” 7News Meteorologist Eileen Whelan said, with showers and thunderstorms increasingly likely to develop in the afternoon and evening.
“Damaging wind gusts will be the main concern, along with heavy rain that could lead to isolated flooding,” Whelan said.
Daytime highs are expected to reach into the mid 90s, and heat index values could top 100.
Severe weather threats should decrease overnight, but pockets of heavy rain and frequent lightning are possible.
Showers could linger into Saturday afternoon, but the rest of the Labor Day weekend will be clearer and cooler.
