<p>Trust me, you don’t want to be <b>Alex Bregman</b> right now.</p><p>“I felt like I got hit by a baseball bat to the face, pretty much,” the <a class="Link" href="https://chicago.suntimes.com/cubs" >Cubs</a>’ third baseman said Wednesday, three days after he took a foul ball to the face while standing on deck during a game in Cincinnati.</p><p>Bregman and the Cubs have said they’ve received relative <a class="Link" href="https://chicago.suntimes.com/cubs/2026/09/22/cubs-alex-bregman-not-on-injured-list-regular-season-playoffs" >“great news” since</a>, in terms of a potential return, one that could come as soon as this weekend.</p><p>But while that would be a boost to the Cubs’ chances as they approach the most meaningful games of their season, he’s dealing with some significant aftereffects, with multiple facial fractures.</p><div class="Enhancement" data-align-center><div class="Enhancement-item">

</div></div><p>“The pain’s been fine,” Bregman said. “I guess I fractured something right by the nerve in my face, so the whole left side of my face has been a little bit numb. As soon as the swelling goes down, I’m sure I’ll feel the breaks a little bit more.</p><p>“But all in all, I’m super lucky that it hit where it hit. A lot of gratitude, because if it was a few centimeters higher, it could have been detrimental.”</p><p>And here’s some more body horror:</p><p>“There’s a lot of fluid in my face,” Bregman said. “If I move, the fluid moves. If I’m bouncing up and down, my face feels like it’s bouncing up and down.”</p><p>All that is to illustrate what Bregman’s dealing with. But being the lauded hard-worker he is, it’s little surprise that he’s champing at the bit to get back in the lineup.</p><p>“[Tuesday] was brutal. I wanted to play,” he said. “I hope [to play this weekend]. We’ll see. One step at a time. I don’t know. I’m going to try to get in there [Wednesday].”</p><p>That last line was a joke, in case you were wondering. Bregman still has a lot to test out to see how he feels and how realistic such a quick comeback is.</p><p>“He’s doing well. But we’ve got to take some steps here,” manager <b>Craig Counsell</b> said. “I’m excited how he feels, and he’s excited. But he still needs to feel some things. He hasn’t run around yet, and he’s got to do that. He’s got to know what it feels like.</p><p>“We’ve got to be careful, and we’ve got to go through the proper steps.”</p><h3><b>Bummer of a bunt</b></h3><h3></h3><p>Utility man <b>Matt Shaw</b> entered Wednesday with a .176 batting average in his last 18 games.</p><p>He got a chance to help produce a run in extra innings Tuesday, but he popped up a bunt attempt with two men on and nobody out in the 10th inning of an eventual 8-2 loss.</p><p>It’s a relative nit to pick from a game in which the Cubs went 1-for-18 with runners in scoring position, but with a lot on the line in the season’s final week, it could be among the moments that loom large.</p><p>“These are the moments you prepare for,” Shaw said. “I know that I’m going to have a situation again where I’m going to have to put a bunt down. We all know what the stakes are. All we can do is keep preparing for these moments.</p><p>“An experience like this is going to help the next time I’m in that situation, and that’s all you can walk away with.”</p><h3><b>Palencia back?</b></h3><h3></h3><p>Since allowing seven runs in his first five outings after a lengthy IL stint, righty reliever <b>Daniel Palencia</b> hasn’t allowed an earned run in seven straight appearances, helpful as the Cubs look for their bullpen to stabilize before the postseason begins.</p>
