During the first hundred days of the TISZA administration, several crisis situations arose during which the new Foreign Minister could have truly demonstrated her diplomatic skills. The energy crisis, the drought, and the historically low water levels of the Danube would each have required serious international negotiations on their own, yet it seems that the minister is nevertheless building an organization in which image management is far more important than representing Hungarian interests.
Világgazdaság took a look at the Foreign Ministry’s track record during its first 100 days under the leadership of Anita Orbán.
As recently as May, one of the first steps of the new Hungarian diplomatic policy was to quietly lift another measure imposed against Ukraine in Hungary. The TISZA government has restored access to the twelve Ukrainian news portals that the Hungarian government had blocked as a retaliatory measure last September, after the government portal in Ukraine had been blocked.
In early August, when the water level of the Danube had dropped to a record low, the Hungarian public would have expected the head of Hungarian diplomacy to take decisive action
to do everything possible to address the situation, as the view had spread that the river was carrying less water due to Austrian dams.

With daring courage, Anita Orbán picked up the phone and asked her Austrian counterpart whether it was actually true that, due to the Austrian barrages, not enough water was reaching the Hungarian section of the Danube. The Austrian foreign minister dismissed this as a rumor and refuted the claim, which the Hungarian counterpart accepted without objection.
Anita Orbán subsequently emphasized that experts had already unequivocally refuted the claim—that water retention by the upstream countries was responsible for the record-low water levels of the Danube in Hungary—on multiple occasions. At the same time, this seems to contradict the statement that a few days later, the Foreign Minister did in fact ask for Slovak assistance to stabilize the Danube’s water flow.
It was a significant failure for Hungarian diplomacy when, recently, hundreds of Hungarian tourists were stranded on the island of Sicily due to the eruption of Mount Etna, and numerous flights were canceled, including flights to Budapest.
The Hungarian Embassy provided neither information nor assistance to the Hungarians in distress,
but merely offered a cynical response: they wished the vacationers who contacted them “good luck.”
To demonstrate her ministry’s commitment to humanity, Anita Orbán announced on her first day in office that the chairs would be returned to the Foreign Ministry’s cafeteria. A similarly “far-reaching” announcement was that the Foreign Trade Division was placed under the authority of the Ministry of Economy, and, in a spectacular move, Anita Orbán had the corresponding inscription removed from the ministry’s facade. With that, the ministry’s focus on using diplomatic relations to achieve concrete economic results appeared to disappear as well.

Anita Orbán promised traditional, interest-based diplomacy and the restoration of alliance relations, but
a review of her first hundred days reveals hardly any tangible results, particularly when it comes to advancing Hungary’s interests.
At the same time, it is striking that a total of 62 ambassadors and mission chiefs were dismissed from the diplomatic corps in two waves. While this is indeed a sweeping measure, it jeopardizes—especially now—the smooth operation of Hungary’s diplomatic missions abroad, where crises are mounting and where these missions would play a significant role in resolving them.
A spectacular but all the more ineffective move was Anita Orbán’s launch a few days ago of a communication campaign titled “Week of 100 Questions and 100 Answers.” In a series of videos, the Foreign Minister presented the ministry’s operations, guided viewers through the negotiation rooms, and showed the camera the official flags of Hungary and its allies. As part of the video campaign, Anita Orbán demonstrated where the flags are displayed and what they look like; however, it is questionable whether this alone can replace diplomatic achievements.
