The Bears‘ navy-and-orange flag, festooned with a football for every championship the team has won, flew at half staff Friday at Halas Hall.
Inside the Bears practice facility, their current head coach praised their iconic one just hours after Mike Ditka died at age 86.
„As far as I’m concerned. Coach Ditka is the gold standard in terms of this place,“ Johnson said Friday. „He’s a legend around here as a player, as a coach. His impact is still being felt to this day. As the head coach of the Bears I feel humbled to be in that same chair he was once in. It’s a sad day.“
Johnson had yet to address the team about Ditka’s passing but said he would at some point before Sunday’s game against the rival Packers at Lambeau Field.
In a statement, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said Ditka „brought intensity, authenticity, and an unmistakable personality to everything he did.“ He praised his work with the Gridiron Greats Assistance Fund, which helped former players, and called him an „ambassador for the game“ who „inspired generations of fans.“
