The Association of Local History Museums and Open-Air Museums awarded the title of “Local Heritage House of the Year” to the Dr. Kéri Museum Collection, which operates in Galoșpetreu (Gálospetri) and Sălacea (Szalacs), villages located in Bihor County, northwestern Romania.
The award was presented Friday at the association’s 23rd national meeting and professional conference in Orfű. Each year, the association uses this title to recognize the work of a local history museum community that makes an outstanding contribution to the preservation and transmission of cultural heritage.
What made this year’s competition special was that two heritage house complexes from outside Hungary also participated.
The Dr. Kéri Museum Collection showcases the built, material, and intangible heritage of the Érmellék region in Partium not through a single heritage house, but through a complex of buildings, farmsteads, cellars, and thematic exhibitions. At the sites in Gálospetri and Szalacs, the lives of Érmellék’s various social strata come to life. The middle-class peasant farmhouse, the Dráveczky manor house of the minor nobility, and the tenant farmer’s house in Szalacs stand side by side, illustrating how the region’s former inhabitants lived, worked, and managed their farms.
One of the most important features of the collection’s work is that it seeks not merely to preserve this heritage, but also to make it meaningful and tangible.
The creation and ongoing expansion of the collection are the result of several decades of work by Gáspár Kéri, whose efforts were recognized by the association in 2015 with the title “Local Heritage House Director of the Year” for his work at the local history museums in Gálospetri and Szalacs. Eleven years later, the professional community recognized the collection’s overall contribution to heritage preservation and presentation with the title “Local Heritage House of the Year 2026.”
According to the citation, the award recognizes the consistent work of heritage preservation that has created a cohesive and tangible cultural heritage from the scattered remnants of Érmellék’s past.
In the “Local Heritage House of the Year 2026” competition, the association also awarded certificates of recognition to the Doroszló Country House, as well as the Kiskunmajsa Country House and Bread-Baking House.
The Doroszló Country House preserves and brings to life the cultural heritage of a Hungarian diaspora community in Serbia. Built around 1910 and opened in 2001, the country house depicts the living and working conditions of a middle-peasant family in the 1930s.
The Kiskunmajsa Country House and Bread-Baking House preserves one of the archaic remnants of the folk architecture of the Kiskunság region. The thatched-roof, three-room farmhouse with a central bench and an open chimney serves as a living venue for traditional bread baking and the transmission of related knowledge.
