While the automotive industry in Europe is struggling with weak demand, increasing competition from China, and the challenges of electrification, Hungary is heading in a different direction. The country is expanding its industrial capacity at a record pace. An analysis by the German foreign trade agency Germany Trade & Invest (GTAI) shows why international industry giants continue to invest billions in Hungary despite the ongoing crisis on the continent—and what risks this strategy entails.
In a sense, the European sales crisis is playing into the hands of the Hungarian economy. Faced with restructuring pressures and skyrocketing location costs in Western Europe, German manufacturers are increasingly relocating production lines to Central and Eastern Europe. At the same time, the Chinese electric-car pioneer BYD is using Hungary as a bridgehead to the European Union with the construction of its plant in Szeged.
The country’s greatest asset is the combination of low production costs and an industrial infrastructure that has grown over decades.
Foreign corporations find well-functioning local supply chains, well-established supplier networks, and a skilled workforce. As a result, new large-scale projects can be integrated into existing European value chains without friction.

The cost factor remains a key linchpin. According to Eurostat data, the average hourly labor cost in Hungary in 2025 was just 15.20 euros—the third-lowest figure within the EU. Added to this is a corporate tax rate of 9 percent, one of the lowest on the continent.
The contrast with Germany is striking: calculations by Mercedes-Benz indicate that a vehicle can be manufactured in Hungary for up to 70 percent less than in Germany.
While industrial labor costs in Germany’s leading industry recently stood at 49.50 euros per hour, the average in Hungary was 15.20 euros.
The stakes are high for the Hungarian economy as a whole. Since vehicle manufacturing accounts for about a quarter of the country’s industrial value added, any slump in Western European sales markets has a direct impact on domestic factories. The production value of Hungarian vehicle and parts plants fell by nearly 10 percent in 2024 and by another 5.3 percent in 2025. Within two years, Hungarian passenger car production plummeted from 507,222 to 411,776 units.

Since the end of 2025, however, a turnaround has been on the horizon. BMW launched series production of its all-electric “Neue Klasse” in Debrecen, starting with the iX3 SUV model. Despite global turbulence for the Munich-based automaker—whose worldwide sales fell by 4.9 percent in the second quarter, with deliveries in China plummeting by as much as 30 percent—the Hungarian plant is running at full capacity. After switching to three-shift operations, the 50,000th car rolled off the assembly line in July; since September, the factory has been producing around the clock. Annual capacity is designed to handle up to 150,000 units.
Mercedes-Benz is also ramping up production. Thanks to a billion-euro investment in Kecskemét, maximum capacity will more than double from the previous 150,000 to up to 400,000 vehicles—a remarkable leap considering the projected output of just over 100,000 units in 2025. The plant stands out for its flexibility: In addition to electric models like the new C-Class, it can continue to assemble internal combustion engine vehicles and hybrids.
Audi Hungaria in Győr is providing an additional boost. In 2025, 200,756 vehicles and nearly 265,000 electric powertrains (+74 percent) rolled off the assembly line there; in addition to the Audi Q3, the Cupra Terramar is also built in the northwestern Hungarian city. With BYD’s investment and Suzuki’s electric vehicle plans in Esztergom, nearly all relevant locations in the country are now electrified.
The figures for the first half of 2026 confirm this progress: the production value in vehicle manufacturing rose by 9.7 percent.
However, the GTAI warns against premature optimism. Expanding capacity does not yet guarantee economic success. If overall demand in the core European markets remains weak, the new plants face the risk of costly underutilization. At the same time, the shortage of skilled workers and rising wages are causing Hungary’s previous wage cost advantage to shrink.
To remain competitive in the long term, Hungary must accelerate its transition from being an “extended workbench” to a high-tech hub.
The first steps are already visible. Companies such as Bosch, Audi, ThyssenKrupp, AVL, and Knorr-Bremse also operate development centers in Hungary focused on software, sensor technology, and automated driving. Whether this ascent up the value chain succeeds quickly enough will determine the future of the Hungarian automotive miracle.
