Around one million people in Hungary are affected by Alzheimer’s disease, either as patients or family members, while 45% of cases could be prevented or significantly delayed, experts told MTI ahead of World Alzheimer’s Day on September 21.

  • Steps to reduce the risk of dementia can be taken even at a young age.

Zoltán Hidasi, an associate professor at the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at Semmelweis University, told MTI that Alzheimer’s disease is a degenerative disorder of the nervous system and the most common cause of dementia. Dementia is a decline in mental abilities so severe that the patient may require assistance even in daily life.

Alzheimer’s disease accounts for 70 to 80% of all cases of dementia. While exact figures are unavailable, estimates suggest that

approximately ten percent of Hungarians over the age of 65—some 200,000 to 300,000 people—suffer from the disease.

Including family members and caregivers, the problem affects nearly one million people, he added.

The exact cause of the disease is unknown. Both genetic and lifestyle factors may play a role in its development. Risk factors include diabetes, high blood pressure, depression, smoking, alcohol consumption, obesity, lack of mental and physical activity, and a decline in social connections, explained Hidasi.

The disease is progressive and worsens over time, though the rate of progression can vary significantly from person to person.

There is currently no effective drug treatment for Alzheimer’s disease, which is why early detection is so important.

A healthy lifestyle and proper management of diabetes and high blood pressure can reduce the risk of dementia and improve patients’ quality of life, emphasized the associate professor at Semmelweis University. When symptoms appear, the first step is to see a primary care physician, followed by specialized neurological or psychiatric care if necessary, said Hidasi.

Ágnes Eszter Melcherné Kázár, a family physician and director of the Feledhetetlen Foundation, told MTI that the proportion of people suffering from dementia rises rapidly with age after 65, and as many as 30–40% of those over 80 may be affected. According to international surveys, the disease can be prevented or significantly delayed in 45% of cases.

Steps to reduce the risk of dementia can be taken even at a young age.

A healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, mental stimulation, avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, and proper management of high blood pressure and diabetes are all important. In Hungary, however, the disease is usually diagnosed late, typically at the moderate-to-severe stage, the expert said.

In moderate and severe stages, patients require increasing assistance with daily living and eventually with self-care as well, which places a significant burden on families. In Hungary, the burden of this condition is borne overwhelmingly by families, with very little government assistance, the expert emphasized. In her view, it is therefore important for dementia to become a public health priority, for early detection to improve, and for a comprehensive strategy to support patients and their families.

Hungary currently lacks a comprehensive dementia strategy and a dementia registry. According to Ágnes Eszter Melcherné Kázár, establishing these, along with strengthening early detection of dementia, could be an important step toward reducing the societal burden of the disease. Although a national dementia program was announced in 2023, the expert noted that its final form, budget, and timeline remain unknown to the public.
