“Archaeology Day” will take place this year from June 12 to 14, during which museums, archaeological exhibitions, and sites across the country will open their doors to visitors, the Association of Hungarian Archaeologists announced Monday.
The central theme of this year’s “From Tribal Leaders to Kings” event series is the presentation of archaeological traces of power and rule.
The weekend events will be complemented by the “Night of Archeology” under the subtitle “The Dark Side of Archaeology.”
The events begin as early as June 6, even before the official opening: In Kalocsa, a family day in a medieval setting offers a program featuring a squire’s test, demonstrations of traditional costumes and weapons, a costume contest, archery, and craft workshops.
In Budapest, at the BTM Castle Museum, the program includes a treasure hunt, medieval games, role-playing, and an archaeological animal bone touch-and-feel exhibit.
In Szolnok, the Damjanich János Museum offers a two-day program where visitors can also gain insight into the less visible aspects of archaeological work. In Szeged, at the Móra Ferenc Museum, in addition to craft and family programs, a demonstration in the restoration workshop, a tour of the collection, and demonstrations using drones and metal detectors will provide insight into modern archaeological methods.
In Eger, the Dobó István Castle Museum ties in with this year’s theme through site tours, a castle tour, and lectures. In Dunaújváros, the Intercisa Museum offers a variety of family and specialized programs ranging from Roman games to a visit to the restoration workshop and demonstrations related to archaeological excavations. In Esztergom, the Castle Museum’s program includes a walk up the castle hill, an archery demonstration, and an archaeological sandbox.
Once again this year, programs for families and children are an important part of the event.
In Paks, Archaeology Day features craft workshops, games, lectures, and an exhibition of artifacts. In Százhalombatta, the Matrica Museum and the Archaeological Park welcome visitors with artifacts from princely burials, a baking demonstration, and flatbread tasting.
A wide variety of museum and family programs will also be offered in Tatabánya, Vác, Szekszárd, Tiszafüred, and Keszthely.
One of the main themes of this year’s event is field archaeology and participatory research.
The Jósa András Museum is offering a program on the outskirts of Csenger, in connection with the M49 route. In Veszprém, the Laczkó Dezső Museum is showcasing, under the title “Science Out of Passion – Participatory Archaeological Research in Veszprém County,” how citizens can also participate in the exploration of the archaeological heritage. In Zalaegerszeg, the Göcsej Museum will participate in the “Night of Archaeology” on June 13 with an evening and night program.
