    Hungary’s leading motorway construction company is continuing its international expansion and has secured an important contract in Slovakia. Duna Aszfalt is part of a consortium that has been awarded the contract to build a 5.3-kilometer section of the strategically important D3 motorway in the north of the country.

    The section in question is located between the towns of Oščadnica (Ócsád) and Čadca (Csaca). The winning consortium consisting of Slovakia’s Váhostav a.s., the Czech Republic’s Metrostav DS a.s. and Hungary’s Duna Aszfalt, will carry out the project for a net price of EUR 230 million, writes Magyar Építők.

    The D3 motorway connects the city of Žilina (Zsolna) with the Polish border, where it joins the Polish S1 motorway. It is an important part of the European road network.

    The Kysuce region (Kiszucaújhely) sees over 20,000 vehicles passing through every day, including a high proportion of trucks, which underlines the urgency of this expansion.

    The project is technically challenging and involves the construction of a 600-meter-long tunnel parallel to the existing Horelica tunnel that has been in operation since 2004. It will be the second, still missing half of the tunnel pair. The construction of a total of 21 bridges and 31 noise barriers, a wildlife overpass, a motorway service area, and a new motorway administration and maintenance center are also part of the tender.

    The contract in Slovakia is just another sign of the increasing internationalization of Hungary’s largest motorway construction company.

    The Duna Group, whose leading subsidiary is Duna Aszfalt, has strategically expanded its presence in the region in recent years.

    At the end of 2024, they acquired the Mota-Engil Central Europe Group in Poland and in February 2025, Euro Strada SRL in Romania.

    The company’s most significant expansion is taking place in Africa, as reported by Világgazdaság. The GED Africa project is being implemented through the subsidiary GED Africa Limited (majority-owned by Duna Aszfalt since 2019). The aim is to build a new road between Kasomeno (Democratic Republic of Congo) and Mwenda (Zambia). This investment is of global trade policy significance. The main purpose is to create the shortest possible transport route for mining products and other goods from Congo and Zambia to the Indian Ocean in Tanzania, thereby improving the efficiency of world trade.
