Contestants of Tour de Hongrie in Békéscsaba
The route of the Tour de Hongrie road cycling race, which starts on Wednesday and runs through Sunday, will take the peloton—now featuring Attila Valter once again.
In the 47th edition of the Hungarian stage race, first held 101 years ago, flat stages will dominate, in keeping with tradition and the country’s natural terrain.
In the opening stage, the cyclists will set off from Gyula and, after completing two and a half laps, will finish in Békéscsaba (both cities are on the southeastern part of Hungary). No climbs will make things difficult for the peloton in the Viharsarok (“Storm Corner”) region (nickname for the southeastern part of Hungary), but crosswinds are expected to be a challenge.
On the second day of racing, the cyclists will cover the route between Szarvas and Paks (central Hungary); a sprint is expected here as well, although the Szőlőhegy climb in Tengelic—the first categorized climb of this year’s race—could influence the outcome in the final stretch, as could the slightly uphill final kilometer. Midway through the five-day race, there will be significant climbs between Szekszárd and Kaposvár (soutwestern Hungary), but a little sprint is still expected in Friday’s finish. This is not the case for the queen stage the following day, which starts in Mohács (near the Croatian border)—commemorating the 500th anniversary of one of the most significant battles in Hungarian history.
In the final third of the stage, the cyclists will have to tackle the Bárány út climb in Pécs (southern Hungary) four times before reaching the finish line at the Zoo. Saturday’s stage will undoubtedly have the greatest impact on the overall standings, yet the final stage presents the most unpredictable scenario: starting in Balatonalmádi (northern shore), this route—which most closely resembles Belgian one-day races in character—concludes the Tour de Hongrie in Veszprém (near Lake Balaton).
The final list of starters will be confirmed at the team presentation in Gyula starting at 6 p.m., but it is already known that Attila Valter will be in the field; he has not competed in this race since his 2020 victory. Following that, the Olympic fourth-place finisher has raced a total of 12 days in Hungary, competing only in national championships and the 2022 Giro d’Italia Grand Tour.
The distinctive jerseys will be familiar sights at the Hungarian stage race: yellow for the overall leader, red for the leader of the mountains classification, green for the leader of the sprinters’ classification, and the white jersey will be contested by the home riders. Information about road closures related to the race, the detailed schedule, and recommended viewing spots can be found on the tdh.hu website.
M4 Sport will broadcast every stage of the Tour de Hongrie in its entirety, live, as well as the team presentation today (Tuesday) starting at 6:00 PM.

Friday: Stage 3, Kaposvár–Szekszárd, 152 km (1,080 m) 1:00 PM
Saturday: Stage 4, Mohács–Pécs, 188 km (2,080 m) 12:00 PM
Sunday: Stage 5, Balatonalmádi–Veszprém, 147 km (1,860 m) 1:00 PM
