Hungarian competitors finished the Canoe Sprint World Championships in Poznan, Poland, with 12 medals—four golds, seven silvers and one bronze. The event was a key stop on the Olympic qualification series. In Olympic events, Hungary won one gold, one silver and one bronze.
For the first time in many years, Hungary’s canoeists outperformed the kayakers, winning three golds, three silvers and a bronze in Poland. The kayakers finished with one gold and four silvers.

National canoe coach László Foltán Jr. highlighted that Hungarian canoeing had not won seven medals at a single world championships since 1997.
Naturally, I am satisfied. Before the world championships, I said I would be happy if we won three golds along with some silver and bronze medals. We exceeded that,”
he said.

Daniel Fejes stood out among the Hungarian delegation, winning gold in the Olympic C-1 1,000-meter event. Foltán said he expects Fejes to be a strong contender at the Olympics in two years. He also praised Kristóf Kollár and István Juhász, who won bronze in the Olympic C-2 500-meter event.
Foltán also highlighted the men’s canoe four, which successfully defended its title, as well as the women’s crew, which finished second. He also praised 18-year-old world championships debutant Petra Paragi for finishing seventh in the Olympic K-1 200-meter event.
The world championships were the fifth stop on the Olympic qualification series, putting the competitors halfway through the qualification process.
Foltán said Hungary is in a strong position in the Olympic rankings, while the men have consolidated their positions, which should give them confidence heading into another important year of qualification.
David Tóth, Hungary’s national kayak coach, praised Bálint Kopasz, who won silver in the K-1 1,000 meters. Tóth said Kopasz raced exceptionally well and had no reason to be disappointed.

Tóth described the performances of the men’s doubles and four-person crews as particularly unlucky. He singled out the men’s K-4 500-meter crew, which had been considered one of the favorites before the race but finished outside the medals. Tóth said events in the days leading up to the competition, including both positive personal news and a death that affected the entire team, may have weighed on the athletes.
The crew nevertheless remains atop the Olympic rankings.

As for the women’s kayakers, the coach said none of the team boats performed well at the world championships and that the results would need to be thoroughly analyzed. He said the women’s kayak program needs to be strengthened and rethought. The men remain in a strong position in the Olympic rankings, while Tóth noted there is also no reason for concern among the women.
