This year marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the American Declaration of Independence. Celebrations are being organized around the world to mark this historic milestone. The Hungarian capital, Budapest, joined this series of international tributes and sent a widely visible message of solidarity.
Caroline Savage, Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Budapest, welcomed the invited guests in Hungarian at a ceremonial event on Thursday at the Várkert Bazaar.
The event served as the centerpiece of a series of activities highlighting the deep historical and cultural ties between the U.S. and Hungary.
In her keynote speech, Caroline Savage traced a path from America’s founding days to the present. She emphasized that every generation inherits a story and has the responsibility to write its next chapter. She noted that they had gathered to celebrate both the groundbreaking ideas that shaped America and the inspiring friendship between the U.S. and Hungary. She emphasized that the two nations, despite fundamentally different historical experiences, came to share the same universal principles:
that freedom is worth defending, that national sovereignty matters, and that the character of a people is revealed in the choices they make when history calls.”
History itself reveals the deep bond between the two peoples better than any diplomatic speech, the Chargé d’affaires said. Over the course of more than two and a half centuries, Americans and Hungarians have repeatedly found themselves on the side of freedom—though not in the same place or at the same time, but always guided by the same aspirations and ideals, she explained.
In this context, Caroline Savage recalled prominent figures from their shared history. First and foremost, she mentioned
Hungarian hussar colonel Mihály Kovács, who joined the American War of Independence and sacrificed his life for the young republic.
Together with his Polish comrade Kazimierz Pulaski, he is considered the “father of the American cavalry,” as both organized the light cavalry of the Continental Army. These hussar traditions live on to this day in the current units of the U.S. Cavalry.

Nearly a century later, the Hungarian freedom fighter Lajos Kossuth traveled to the United States, where he was celebrated as a hero of freedom—a bond that is still commemorated today by his bronze bust in the U.S. Capitol in Washington, she continued.
The two countries also stood by each other in preserving symbols of national identity.
For example, the U.S. safeguarded the Hungarian Holy Crown during the turmoil of the Cold War until its return in 1978. Another powerful symbol of solidarity remains Cardinal József Mindszenty, who found refuge from Soviet troops at the U.S. Embassy in Budapest in 1956 and spent 14 years there. His portrait in the ambassador’s office still serves as a reminder today of his courage and unwavering commitment to freedom of thought.
Furthermore, Caroline Savage emphasized how greatly America was enriched throughout the 20th century by Hungarian immigrants who came to the U.S. in search of freedom and opportunities for self-fulfillment. As examples, she cited József Galamb, the key co-developer of the legendary Ford Model T; Adolph Zukor and William Fox, the visionary pioneers in building the Hollywood film industry; Ágoston Haraszthy, the founder of modern California viticulture; and John von Neumann, the world-famous mathematician and “father of the computer.”
The bond between the two nations is sustained above all by the people in their everyday lives,

This year, the bilateral partnership has been revitalized by high-level, historic visits in both directions. It is also renewed on a daily basis through joint military training exercises, academic exchange programs, and brisk tourism, she added. Major American companies no longer operate in Hungary merely as investors; they have become strategic partners in the country’s economic future, explained Caroline Savage.

She noted that the conditions for exchange and cooperation have been significantly improved.
Hungary’s full membership in the Visa Waiver Program (which offers benefits for visa-free entry) and the new direct flight to Philadelphia make traveling, studying, and investing easier than ever before.

To this day, numerous Hungarian immigrants continue to shape the destiny of the United States. Caroline Savage concluded by expressing her hope that this shared success story will continue into the future.
As a visible highlight of these celebrations, Budapest’s Chain Bridge shone in the American national colors of red, white, and blue on Friday evening. The spectacular light show drew numerous onlookers to the banks of the Danube.
The celebrations, held under the theme “250 Years of Freedom,” will continue on Saturday, July 4. All-day festivities featuring live concerts and family activities will be held at Jane Haining Quay and Antall József Quay. That evening, the Chain Bridge will once again be illuminated with festive lights, serving as a symbol of transatlantic friendship visible from afar.
