The Hungarian government has signed a cooperation agreement with the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) to ensure the security of sporting events, so that no match falls victim to security challenges, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó announced on Thursday in Budapest.
At a joint press conference with Alexandre Zouev, UN Assistant Secretary-General for Rule of Law and Security Institutions, the minister reported that Hungarians have a very special relationship with sport, but at the same time they firmly reject the mixing of geopolitics and sport, as well as all forms of violence associated with sporting events.
He warned that one of the main challenges of hosting major sporting events is security and the spread of hatred and extremist ideologies. “But I would like to assure everyone that Hungary is an island of peace, where there is zero tolerance for anti-Semitism, we do not tolerate hatred, and we do everything we can to ensure the safety of participants in sporting events,” he said.
“For us, sporting events are places of family entertainment and joy, not of inciting hatred or fear of violence.
I am proud to say that all major sporting events held in Hungary in recent years have been completely free of any verbal or physical violence,”
he continued.
“In Hungary, we take a tough stance against illegal migration (…) Here, when you attend a sporting event, you do not have to worry about becoming a victim of violence,” the politician added.

Minister Szijjártó confirmed that the Hungarian government is happy to cooperate with the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism to ensure that future sporting events are just as safe. “I greatly appreciate the cooperation on which we have just signed an agreement (…) We will fill this cooperation with real content, and we are counting on you to ensure that no sporting event falls victim to global security challenges in the future – especially those held in Hungary,” he emphasized.
The minister went on to recall that humanity is currently living in an age of danger, characterized by the real risk of the world becoming divided into blocs once again.
In this situation, we believe that sport should be a common, unified language that connects nations, people, and continents. We strongly reject any approach that would sacrifice sport on the altar of geopolitical reasons,”
he said.
In this regard, he emphasized that the only condition for participation in international competitions should be whether a given athlete or team has qualified.

“No other conditions should be imposed, as they are always subjective. And if a condition is subjective, it always depends on the human factor, on the person who determines it. One time we may be on the ‘light side,’ but another time we may find ourselves on the ‘dark side. That is why we hope that in the coming period, sport will speak the language of peace, serve the cause of peace, and provide an opportunity for reconciliation between nations,” he said.
Péter Szijjártó believes that Hungary is setting a good example in this area, as the national football teams of Israel and Belarus have chosen our country as their home ground. “It is an honor that they chose us, which also shows that Hungary is a safe and friendly place,” he said.
