Two pieces of state-of-the-art medical imaging equipment were handed over on Tuesday, at the recently opened diagnostic and therapeutic center of Semmelweis University’s Városmajor Heart and Vascular Center in Budapest.
In his welcome speech, Béla Merkely, rector of the university, said that the equipment serves the most important mission of making the most advanced medical technologies available to everyone in healthcare, while also supporting research and education.

Calling the Városmajor clinic the university’s flagship, the rector said that the institution has been among the world’s top 50 cardiology centers for years and ranks 35th in the US News higher education rankings.
The newly delivered CT and MRI equipment is the latest development from Siemens.
The CT scanner is the second photon-counting detector device in the country, which, as the rector said, could revolutionize care in terms of speed, diagnostic accuracy, and radiation dose reduction. The MRI machine is also among the most advanced equipment currently available, aiding in the early detection of heart muscle and vascular diseases, more accurate differentiation of clinical pictures, and the establishment and support of surgical plans, he said.

The rector explained that
the two devices will enable the clinic to perform twice as many examinations as it currently does, which is approximately 6,000 CT and 4,000 MRI examinations per year.
With the recently handed over new diagnostic block and the high-value equipment investment, the clinic will operate as Europe’s most advanced cardiovascular “supercenter,” Merkely emphasized.

Rita Vincze, managing director of Siemens Healthcare Kft., noted that the cooperation between the company and the university has been exemplary for years. Since 2019, they have completed sixteen CT education and research projects and 38 MRI research and development projects.
The managing director also announced that
Siemens had chosen Semmelweis University as its reference center, with the relevant document being signed on Tuesday.
The purchase of the two devices was made possible by a public task financing support agreement between the Hungarian State and the university. The CT machine cost HUF 1.3 billion (EUR 3.4 million) and the MRI scanner cost HUF 514 million (EUR 1.3 million).
