The town of Szerencs (northeastern Hungary) has gained a new historical landmark: Rákóczi Castle and the Reformed Church have officially been designated as priority sites of the national heritage. At the ceremony, János Áder, former President of Hungary and founder of Blue Planet Foundation, drew attention to the importance of historical heritage and national identity.
János Áder stated that the decision opens a new chapter in the history of the fortress and the centuries-old church, which will receive special attention and protection in the future.
He recalled that
the castle was built in the 16th century, grew in strength during the Rákóczi family’s ownership, and acquired its Renaissance character, while within the church’s walls, István Bocskai was elected prince in 1605.
He emphasized that on the 350th anniversary of the birth of Ferenc Rákóczi II, a conference will be held to commemorate the prince’s life and work.
Gábor Móczár, Director General of the National Heritage Institute, noted that with the inclusion of the Rákóczi Castle in Szerencs and the Reformed church, there are now 88 sites designated as national and historical memorials.

At the unveiling, Péter Harrach, Chairman of the Hungarian Committee of National Remembrance, noted that historical memorial sites not only evoke past events but also preserve the ideals that shaped Hungarian and European culture.
He pointed out that the region’s history dates back to the Middle Ages, when Benedictine communities also contributed to the strengthening of Christian European culture. He emphasized that this spiritual heritage lived on later and was also reflected through defining figures of Hungarian history.

The committee chair highlighted that
the role of historical memorial sites is to build bridges between generations and help keep the national memory alive.
He stated that the task of the present is to preserve the legacy of the past and pass it on to future generations.
The commemorative event concluded with a conference titled “Faith, Power, Homeland: In the Footsteps of the Rákóczis from Szerencs to the Fall of the War of Independence,” followed by a service held in the Reformed Church.
