    A delegation from the European Commission will travel to Budapest on Friday, where “consultations with the incoming Hungarian government will begin,” Commission spokesperson Paula Pinho announced on Thursday.

    According to her, the purpose of the visit is to begin negotiations on the most important EU issues as soon as possible, in line with what Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced this week. The spokesperson emphasized that time is of the essence on several issues, thus it is in the interest of both Hungary and the European Union to make rapid progress.

    “Whether it is the loan for Ukraine or recovery funds, it is in the interest of both Hungary and the EU to make progress as soon as possible. That is why these are preliminary talks, aimed at ensuring that when the new government takes office, we can act immediately and not waste any time. That is the purpose and framework of this meeting,” she stated.

    The spokesperson also noted that the talks do not have a comprehensive agenda, and a wide range of topics may be discussed. “These are initial talks, and we may not be able to cover everything. The goal is to launch the dialogue and see where progress can be made,”

    Pinho said.

    A question raised at the press conference concerned the fact that Péter Magyar had previously not supported Ukraine’s accelerated EU accession and would even put it to a referendum, while favoring the merit-based accession of Western Balkan countries. Regarding this, the spokesperson said: “There will be ample opportunity to discuss the new government’s position and move forward accordingly.”

    At the press conference, journalists also raised the issue that, in connection with the €90 billion loan to Ukraine, Magyar had previously stated that he would only lift the block on it if Ukraine restored the Druzhba oil pipeline; however, the Commission had previously deemed linking the two issues unacceptable, as an agreement on the loan had already been reached at the European Council level.

    The spokesperson emphasized: the EU’s position on the loan to Ukraine has not changed; the agreement was concluded last December, and the necessary conditions have been met. “The only change is that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced two days ago that the pipeline could be operational again by the end of April,” she added.
