    Experts and volunteers are helping with flood protection in Ipolytarnóc, where the Ipoly River breached residential buildings.

    said István Gál, Mayor of Ipolytarnóc, early Thursday morning.

    The flood alert level in the village rose from level one to level three in a matter of hours, but experts say the water level is expected to fall slowly.

    “Water breached two houses, and nine people were evacuated yesterday by disaster management staff and volunteers from the local rescue teams. Six properties are surrounded by water, and the residents are still inside and do not intend to leave their homes. The houses can only be reached by boat,” he added.

    As he said, it is currently quiet in the village, and the water is moving slowly. According to forecasts, no further rainfall is expected, but it will take a week for the water to recede, and the residents will not be able to move back until then. Once the water has receded, disinfection with chlorine lime and hypochlorite will begin, and the 1,500 contaminated sandbags will also be collected and destroyed. Gál also revealed that the Hungarian Armed Forces, disaster management staff, and members of the HELP and KABAR rescue teams are continuously assisting with flood protection in the town.

    A first-degree flood alert was issued in Ipolytarnóc on Tuesday, November 25, at 12:30 p.m., which was raised to second degree that same afternoon and to third degree on Wednesday morning at 7:30 a.m.

    The water level of the Ipoly River can be monitored hour by hour on the website of the National Water Authority. According to their data, the highest water level measured on the river so far was 432 centimeters.
