The Hungarian government is ending the era of protected fuel prices, as market prices have fallen below the state-imposed price caps. However, experts urge caution. The geopolitical situation surrounding Iran and the Strait of Hormuz continues to cause extreme volatility at gas stations—and Hungary’s neighbors are choosing a completely different path.
Last week, motorists in Hungary experienced a significant drop in fuel prices. Prices fell by 30 forints (€0.085) within a very short period. Officially, market participants and the Hungarian oil company MOL attributed the decline to the recovery of the forint exchange rate and signs of easing on the international oil market. However, the political groundwork had already been laid.
The TISZA government had previously announced that prices would fall below the level of the state-protected prices by the weekend—a prediction that proved correct.
As Világgazdaság reports, the new wholesale prices for the current week were published on Monday morning. Since retail prices generally follow these wholesale prices directly, the industry was watching the figures closely. For now, the rapid downward trend has stopped. According to the fuel-price monitoring blog holtankoljak.hu, wholesale prices for gasoline and diesel remain unchanged this Tuesday.
Current average fuel prices in Hungary are:
- 95-octane gasoline: 590 forints (€1.67) per liter
- Diesel: 611 forints (€1.73) per liter
Since these market prices are below the previous state price caps—595 forints (€1.69) per liter for gasoline and 615 forints (€1.74) for diesel—the government has taken action. The political leadership is convinced that the protected-price mechanism has become unnecessary.
The decision to phase out the regulatory mechanism has been finalized, and detailed implementation plans are expected later this week.
Government intervention in price formation has been a central, though controversial, measure in Hungary in recent years to protect consumers from inflation. The withdrawal marks a significant departure from this practice.
Economic analysts, however, are concerned about Hungary’s move in the context of the current global situation. The market’s unpredictability was already evident over the past weekend. Reports that Iran might block the Strait of Hormuz—a narrow waterway through which nearly 20% of global oil flows—put traders on high alert.
The reaction was immediate. At the start of trading on Monday, oil prices jumped to $82.30 per barrel. Following positive signals from U.S.–Iranian negotiations, the market corrected downward during the day and fell below the $80 mark. Prices subsequently stabilized and ended up below $79 per barrel.
For many supporters of market intervention, this nervousness in the markets reinforces the argument that government involvement in energy markets still serves a useful purpose.
While Hungary is preparing to exit the system, neighboring countries are currently moving in the opposite direction and extending their protective measures.
Although the methods differ, the goal across the region is the same. In Croatia, state regulation remains firmly in place, while Slovenia and Austria announced just days and weeks ago that they would extend their market interventions until December and August, respectively.
This regional trend highlights how deeply rooted fears of new energy price shocks remain. Whether Hungary’s initiative to once again leave price formation entirely to the market will prove sustainable, given the unpredictable situation involving Iran, will become clear in the coming weeks.
