The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Romania purchased six new service vehicles for pastors serving in scattered communities with support from Hungary. Thanks to funding from the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the pastors received the new vehicles on Friday in Cluj-Napoca (Kolozsvár), Maszol reports.
“This is a very useful gift for the national minority living in scattered communities. These vehicles will greatly help the lives and work of many fellow servants and many congregational communities,” said Lutheran Bishop Dezső Zoltán Adorjáni at the handover ceremony, expressing his appreciation and gratitude for the support received from the Hungarian government.
In his speech, he pointed out that although for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Romania, living as a minority in scattered settlements is a centuries-old historical way of life, “even today it is not a word with negative connotations; despite all the difficulties and challenges, it does not mean the end, destruction, or giving up, but life.
We, the Hungarian Lutherans of Transylvania, have been a minority and a scattered community for centuries, and we are proof of this sustainable way of life, because we have founded and maintained schools, kindergartens, cultural, spiritual, community, and charitable institutions, and we strive to continue doing so today.”
He emphasized that survival is no longer the sole goal of their church, “because that would not be enough.”
“Instead, we are now talking about growth, development, and strengthening, because that is truly the most important characteristic of our Transylvanian Lutheranism. This is not simply a question of quantity, but a requirement for quality, for qualitative progress. The current Hungarian government has been a great partner and supporter in this qualitative progress from the very beginning, and with its help and well-thought-out support policy, we have been able to make this qualitative change and realize a new kind of dynamic in our service and community building,” the bishop expressed his gratitude.
The keys to the new seven-seater Dacia cars were ceremoniously handed over to the pastors by Péter Kiss-Parciu, Deputy State Secretary for Foreign Affairs and Trade.
Prior to the handover, the Deputy State Secretary said: “I hope these will prove to be useful tools for your service. On behalf of the Hungarian government, we will always be open to new initiatives that facilitate your activities and enable you to carry them out more effectively.”
“Faith is important, but tools are also needed to reach people. These six cars serve this purpose, as we can see that there is a huge area to cover from Partium to Cluj-Napoca, through Szeklerland, all the way to Bucharest, and in this area we need to convey the message and provide the service that is very important to people,” he pointed out.
