Spring marks a season of transformation, renewal, and fresh starts. But how can we embrace this spirit while staying true to the principles of sustainability? The EthnoEco group at the Museum of Ethnography, together with the patchwork community, offers a creative answer through their joint workshop series beginning March 25, Turizmus.com reports.
EthnoEco – the museum’s unit promoting environmentally conscious practices – organizes programs that popularize sustainable solutions that can be applied in everyday life. At their clothing swap events, textiles that might otherwise go unused are collected and given a new purpose—these same materials become the foundation for the EthnoEco × Patchworkers workshop series.
In the six-session program, participants will explore three different techniques during the first three events: crochet, basket weaving, and one of the most free forms of patchwork, the crazy quilting.
In these sessions, the used textiles are not treated as waste but as creative raw materials, while participants draw inspiration from both cultural and contemporary examples of textile recycling.
The first workshop will take place on March 25, where participants will process leftover textiles from EthnoEco clothing swaps using crochet techniques:
clothes are cut into strips, transformed into yarn, and then made into small rugs, seat cushions, or pot mats.
During the session, the EthnoEco team will help participants learn the basic techniques and provide inspiration from the museum’s collections.
The second session will be on April 8, focusing on basket weaving. Participants will create durable household items from twisted textile material, with the session led by Gyöngyi Váradi, a master of the Hungarian Patchwork Guild. This workshop not only teaches a technique but also offers a glimpse into the world of patchwork communities.

The third workshop, on April 22, introduces participants to the crazy quilting technique. This method, based on freely using small textile pieces, results in unique pillows.
The session connects to the “Blueprint Patchwork” exhibition, showing how a traditional technique can become a contemporary, personal form of expression.
The workshops take place in the Ethnographic Salon, each session running from 4:00 PM to 6:30 PM at the museum’s Damjanich Street entrance. Each session accommodates up to 15 participants; the fee is 2,000 forints (5.20 euros) per session. All necessary materials are provided by the organizers.
The workshops, the joy of creating, and the focus on sustainability will also be part of the Museum’s Easter program on March 28. As previously reported by Hungary Today, the themed day’s free-entry fair will feature works by thirty visual artists, designers, and artisans, giving visitors the chance to meet the creators in person.
