    The commemoration held by Hungarians in Dallas marked the end of President Tamás Sulyok’s visit to Hungarian diaspora communities in the United States.

    At Sunday’s commemoration ceremony held by Hungarians from the Dallas area, the head of state emphasized that Hungarian communities with long-standing roots in the United States, including those in Dallas, are highly valued because they occupy their place in society both as Hungarians and as U.S. citizens.

    Tamás Sulyok cited the Hungarian Revolution and War of Independence of 1848-49 as an example of the creation of Hungarian values that also enrich others, whose ideal of freedom inspired the citizens of the United States.

    He added that during the Hungarian Revolution, Abraham Lincoln, who later became president, submitted a motion to the U.S. Congress in support of Hungarian freedom while serving as a representative of the state of Illinois.

    As an example of the creation of Hungarian values, he mentioned the work of the Hungarian Cistercian fathers who fled communism after the dissolution of their order and started a new life in the United States.

    The ceremony took place at the school of the Cistercian Abbey of Our Lady of Dallas.

    During his stay in the United States, President Sulyok also visited the Hungarian communities in New York and Cleveland, as well as the Hungarians of Árpádhon in the state of Louisiana, founded in 1896.
