Baia Mare, Romania

Street signs honoring prominent Hungarian cultural figures have been installed in the Transylvanian city of Baia Mare (Nagybánya), marking the official implementation of a long-delayed decision to rename several public spaces.

In a Facebook post, Zsolt István Pap, deputy mayor of the city — where the Hungarian community is considered a diaspora minority in terms of population ratio — wrote that new names have been assigned to seven streets and squares. He said the renaming of the streets is intended to preserve the city’s historical and cultural heritage and to honor individuals of significance to the local community.

The municipal council of the county seat of Maramureș (Máramaros) approved the related resolution submitted by the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (RMDSZ) in October 2024. At the time, Zsolt Pintér, head of the RMDSZ organization in Maramureș County, said that a small street located above the city park would be named after renowned Hungarian novelist Mór Jókai.

The hill at the city park has been commonly referred to by the city’s Hungarian residents as “Jókai Hill” ever since the writer visited Baia Mare in 1876.

A nearby small street next to the theater has been named after actor, singer, and director Márton Lendvay.

Implementation of the decision, however, had to be suspended after several representatives of the National Liberal Party (PNL), along with residents living on the affected streets, opposed the measure during the election period.

The new street signs have now been installed in the renamed public spaces.

In his post, Pap also wrote that, alongside the two Hungarian figures, streets in the city — known for its gold mining history and renowned artists’ colony — would also be named after the Romanian-born mine owner and politician Alexiu Pocol (also known as Elek Pokol), and the German expressionist painter Walter Friedrich. Additional public spaces will bear the names of Greek Catholic bishop Alexandru Rusu, Greek Catholic bishop Iuliu Hossu, and former Orthodox Archbishop Justinian.

For many years, the Hungarian community of Baia Mare had hoped that streets in the city would be named after Hungarian figures. Since the fall of communism, only a small number of Hungarian street names have been officially adopted in Baia Mare. Among the founders of the Baia Mare artists’ colony, for instance, only Károly Ferenczy and Simon Hollósy currently have streets named after them.

According to Pintér,

RMDSZ also plans to name streets after the colony’s other founders — Béla Iványi-Grünwald, István Réti, and János Thorma — and similarly commemorate the literary work of László Németh, a native of the city.

Based on the most recent Romanian census, 8,713 of Baia Mare’s 108,000 residents identified themselves as ethnic Hungarians.
