Based on preliminary estimates released Wednesday by the Central Statistical Office (KSH), industrial production in March was 6.7 percent higher than a year earlier. After adjusting for working days, production rose by 3.7 percent. Seasonally and working-day adjusted industrial output was 3.1 percent higher than in February.
“The March industrial production data came as a significant positive surprise and clearly explains why first-quarter GDP turned out to be significantly better than expected,” noted Orsolya Nyeste, senior macroeconomic analyst at Erse Bank, in a comment sent to MTI.
The detailed breakdown is not yet available, the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH) will publish it on May 13. The office’s brief commentary suggests that the improvement occurred across a relatively broad base. Battery production may have accelerated, and annual vehicle production also turned positive in March. “The coming months will determine whether we are indeed seeing the start of a positive trend in the industry,” added Orsolya Nyeste.
Péter Virovácz, chief economist at ING Bank, believes that the Hungarian industry found its footing in March following a slump in February.
Moreover, this ranks among the biggest positive surprises of recent years. Growth has been observed in three of the past four months, and following the low point in November, a more sustained upward trend is emerging. How long this positive trend will last will depend largely on the war in the Middle East, the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, and the resulting shocks to energy markets and supply chains.
With confidence in the new export capacities set to come online or already ramping up in the remainder of this year, Hungarian industry’s full-year performance could reach growth of around 4–5 percent in 2026.
In other words, after three years of industrial recession, industry could once again make a positive contribution to the overall performance of the Hungarian economy, provided that these prospects are not derailed by a prolonged blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, wrote the ING expert.
For Dániel Molnár, senior analyst at the GFÜ Economic Analysis Center, the March industrial production figures also came as a remarkably positive surprise. The data is certainly unexpected given that last week’s foreign trade figures indicated a significant decline in the most important product groups. He noted, however, that there is significant uncertainty regarding the outlook for industry.
Although it is encouraging that the order backlog in key sectors exceeded the previous year’s level by more than a fifth in February, international developments—particularly the energy shock caused by the war in Iran—call for caution. Dániel Molnár essentially expects that, starting in the second half of the year, industrial production could expand in a more stable growth environment, provided that the war in Iran comes to an end and the trade war with the United States does not escalate again.
