The V4 countries and Austria agree that illegal migration and terrorism are ongoing challenges, which is why cooperation must be strengthened, primarily through the introduction of data and information exchange between them, Interior Minister Sándor Pintér said on Monday at a press conference on the occasion of the meeting of the interior ministers of the Visegrád Group (V4) in Egerszalók (northeastern Hungary).
Rotating Chairman Sándor Pintér stated that the central topics of the meeting continue to be internal security and illegal migration, the relevance of which is confirmed by the war in Iran. The V4 countries and Austria agree that neither illegal migration nor the threat of terrorism are problems that can be solved immediately, but rather both represent a long-term challenge, which is why cooperation must be strengthened, primarily through the introduction of data and information exchange between them.

Contacts with transit and origin countries must also be intensified in order to combat human trafficking, uncover smuggling networks, and create joint response options, according to the interior minister.
The minister pointed out that it is particularly important to ensure data exchange between the IT systems of the EU and the V4 countries as well as Austria, which would offer further opportunities for prevention and detection.
He explained that the financial requirements for this would have to be met not only from the countries’ own resources, but also from the EU budget for the next seven years. Pintér explained Hungary’s position, which is based on a system of registration and control at the borders built up from its own resources.
He recalled that Hungarian police officers are deployed along international migration routes at the Bulgarian-Turkish border, in Serbia, and at its border with North Macedonia, where joint patrols are also carried out with Austria, Romania, and Slovenia. Hungary and its partners are therefore making considerable efforts to protect the external borders of the European Union and the Schengen area, the minister emphasized.
Pintér announced that the participants of the meeting would adopt a joint declaration in the hope that its implementation would increase the security of the V4 countries and Austria.

Paweł Dąbrowski, Poland’s ministerial representative for international affairs, said that they support any solution that increases the security of the European Union and pointed out that current data analysis needs to be automated, which is a huge challenge for member states. The politician pointed out that there are solutions that go beyond the scope of the member states and therefore need to be financed by the European Union. He emphasized that the current migration situation in Europe requires innovative thinking and changes to the traditional models based on the Geneva Convention.
Austrian Interior Minister Gerhard Karner, for his part, emphasized the importance of data exchange. In connection with the new approach to combating illegal migration, he noted that efforts must be made to
conduct asylum procedures outside the Union and also to set up repatriation centers outside the EU.
He pointed out that, thanks to good cooperation with neighboring countries, Austria had succeeded in “massively” reducing illegal immigration last year.
Slovak State Secretary for the Interior Lucia Kurilovská pointed out that Slovakia, as the next V4 presidency, would focus intensively on cross-border police cooperation and the exchange of information and experience. It was believed that cooperation between the V4 countries and Austria would become even more important in the future and contribute to the success and strengthening of the member states concerned.
Czech Interior Minister Lubomír Metnar emphasized that the V4 countries face similar security challenges in terms of migration, border protection, and cross-border crime, which is why it is essential that
interoperability between them and throughout the EU is functional and reliable.
He recalled that the V4 has long been fighting illegal immigration, and the current meeting reaffirms that the countries of the region will continue to work closely together and seek common solutions.
