As the Hungarian Central Statistical Office’s flash report reveals, food prices have risen less than the average inflation rate over the past year, but eggs are more than 20 percent more expensive.
Consumer prices rose by 4.3 percent compared to October of the previous year, but remained unchanged compared to September, confirms the Central Statistical Office (KSH).
Over 12 months, compared to October 2024, food prices rose by 3.9 percent, including:
– eggs by 20.2 percent
– chocolate and cocoa by 16.1 percent
– coffee by 14.8 percent
– confectionery products by 12.8 percent
– snacks by 10.3 percent
– fruit and vegetable juices by 9.0 percent
– school meals by 7.7 percent
– non-alcoholic soft drinks by 7.2 percent
– bakery products by 6.5 percent
– cooking oil by 5.3 percent
– poultry meat by 3.1 percent.
Within the product group: the price of margarine increased by 27.8%, flour by 14.8%, dairy products by 10.2%, milk by 8.9%, sugar by 8.8%, salami and sausage by 6.6%, and pork by 5.8% percent. Households had to pay 10.7 percent more on average for energy, with piped gas rising by 23.7 percent and electricity by 2.1 percent.
The price of alcoholic beverages and tobacco products rose by 7.5 percent. Services became 6.7 percent more expensive, with vacation services rising by 13.2 percent, vehicle repair and maintenance by 10.1 percent, health services by 9.7 percent, personal care services by 9.4 percent, home repair and maintenance and rent by 9.0 percent, and sports and museum tickets by 8.4 percent.
The price of durable consumer goods rose by 2.4 percent, including jewelry by 22.2 percent, furniture by 4.4 percent, heating and cooking equipment by 2.9 percent, and new passenger cars by 2 percent. The price of vehicle fuels fell by 2.2 percent, while medicines and medical products rose by 5.9 percent.
Compared to September 2025, consumer prices remained unchanged on average. Food prices fell by 0.1 percent, mainly due to a 2.1 percent drop in the price of seasonal foods. The price of confectionery flour products fell by 2.5 percent, sugar by 1.1 percent, fruit and vegetable juices by 1.1 percent, pork by 1.0 percent, butter and butter spreads by 0.7 percent, while eggs rose by 3.3 percent, baked goods by 1.6 percent, and margarine by 0.5 percent.

Due to the change of season, clothing prices rose the most, by 2.3 percent. The average price of household energy remained unchanged, while the average price of services fell by 0.1 percent, with the price of holiday services falling by 0.9 percent. The price of vehicle fuels rose by 1.1 percent, while the price of medicines and medical products rose by 0.1 percent.
The latest data is slightly lower than expected, but it still shows that the economy is not in a state of price stability. The margin cap artificially lowers the price index by around 1.5 percentage points. As a result, inflation could fall below four percent by the end of this year, aided by the extension of the margin cap, and could fall well below three percent at the beginning of next year with further artificial suppression measures, as states Portfolio‘s analysis. However, market assessments confirm, this will not allow the central bank to cut interest rates, as the medium-term outlook remains uncertain.
