    Republican members of Congress have sent a formal letter to Commission President Ursula von der Leyen sharply criticizing the European Commission’s interference in the Hungarian electoral process, Balázs Orbán announced in a post on X ahead of Sunday’s elections.

    “We write to express our deep concern that, in connection with the election scheduled to take place in Hungary on April 12, 2026, actions taken by the European Commission and other European Union institutions have gone far beyond customary expression of political opinion regarding developments within a member state,” the letter to the president of the European Commission reads.

    It further states that Hungarian officials, analysts, and representatives of civil society have repeatedly expressed concerns regarding the structure and distribution of substantial EU-funded resources to media organizations, interest groups, and non-state actors operating in Hungary. These financial flows would predominantly benefit organizations critical of Viktor Orbán’s government.

    As Balázs Orbán explains in his post on X, the letter highlights politically motivated funding, pressure on the media and NGOs, and censorship under the Digital Services Act (DSA) as means of exerting influence.

    The letter calls for full transparency regarding EU-related funding, selection criteria, and safeguards against partisan political activities, as well as clarity on how regulatory measures impact election campaigns.

    Petr Bystron, an AfD politician in the European Parliament, called for the establishment of a comprehensive investigative committee in the European Parliament to investigate and expose the European Commission’s systematic interference in democratic elections across Europe. “Hungary and Romania are clear cautionary examples—but the interference extended even to the elections for the European Parliament itself. We stand and fight for real democracy and truly fair elections,” the politician said.
