The most important economic data arrived three days before the elections, painting a mixed picture: inflation is low, consumption is picking up, while industry continues to struggle. Based on the government’s data, the results confirm that wage increases, tax cuts, and price-capping measures are strengthening the population’s purchasing power, while external factors—including the war and the weak European economic environment—continue to hold back industrial performance, wrote Index.
Wednesday was an important day; just three days before the elections, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) simultaneously released its three most important monthly data sets—inflation, retail, and industrial statistics. Let us first look at the big picture:
In March, consumer prices were 1.8% higher than a year earlier. Over the course of one month, consumer prices rose by 0.4%.
Retail sales were up 3.8% compared to the same period last year and 0.4 % compared to the previous month.
And finally, the usual bad news arrived: industrial production fell by 1.5% compared to the same period last year and by 1.8% compared to the previous month.
But let us take it one step at a time. Over the past 12 months, compared to March 2025, food prices overall did not change significantly, although a 3.2% decrease was observed excluding catering services. However, the prices of several products rose significantly: baked goods by 13.3%, deli items by 9.7%, while the prices of candy, honey, and canned fish all increased by 7.9%. The price of fresh domestic and tropical fruits rose by 7.5% eating out by 7.4% and ice cream by 6.6%.
In contrast, several staple foods became cheaper: the price of canned meat fell by 26.1%, margarine by 24.9%, potatoes by 18.5%, pork offal by 18.4%, and butter and butter spread by 18.2%. Dairy products (excluding cheese) became 15.3% cheaper, flour 13.4%, and milk 13.1%. The price of services rose by an average of 4.1%, with theater tickets (up 18.8%) and foreign vacations (up 17.8%) seeing particularly sharp increases. Prices for domestic vacations rose by 8.7%, and admission to sports events and museums by 8.4%, while personal care services and vehicle repair and maintenance both cost 7.8% more.

Prices for alcoholic beverages and tobacco products rose by 5.5%, with tobacco products alone increasing by 7.2%. The price of household energy rose by 4.3%: consumers paid 7.9% more for piped gas and 2.4% more for electricity. Prices for durable consumer goods rose by 2.7%, with jewelry seeing a particularly sharp increase of 29.1%, while prices for motorcycles rose by 6.7%, used passenger cars by 4.4%, and indoor furniture by 4.3%. Prices for medicines and medical products rose by 6%, while prices for vehicle fuels fell by 3.0%.
Compared to February 2026, consumer prices rose by an average of 0.4% over the course of one month.
Food prices fell by an average of 0.1%, and by 0.6% excluding food services. At the same time, several products became more expensive: ice cream prices rose by 1.3%, bacon by 1.2%, and other meats and tea both by 1.1%. The prices of canned meat and deli items both rose by 1.0%, eggs by 0.8%, and cooking oil by 0.3%.
In contrast, several food items became cheaper: the price of dried legumes fell by 3.6%, butter and margarine by 3.2%, store-bought coffee by 2.5%, pork fat by 2.1%, dried pasta by 2.0%, sugar by 1.8%, and preserved fruit by 1.6%. The prices of pork and dairy products (excluding cheese) both fell by 1.3%, milk by 0.9%, and chocolate and cocoa by 0.4%.
