“Back then, various monks were sent from the West to convert us to Christianity; now it is up to us to ‘rebaptize’ Western and Northern Europe by strengthening Christianity,” emphasized the State Secretary for Church and Nationality Relations at the Prime Minister’s Office on Sunday in Velence (central Hungary). This followed a festive Mass held in the completely renovated St. Stephen’s Church, which was refurbished at a cost of around 100 million forints (257,069 euros; 1 euro = 389 forints).
Miklós Soltész recalled that the founders of the European Union chose St. Benedict as their patron saint, who called his followers to prayer and work; however, if they were to rise again, they would be astonished at how Christianity is being suppressed on the continent or how space is being given to other religions, such as Islam, in Europe.
He added:
respect for work has also been pushed into the background; it is no longer as important, “rather, the promotion ideologies has come to the fore, which are destroying both the future and the present of the continent.”
The state secretary emphasized that it is our country’s responsibility and duty to stop these trends and strengthen Christianity, as was done in Velence.

“The faithful, in cooperation with the government, the member of parliament, and the local government, contributed to the interior renovation of the church as well as the complete renovation of the adjacent former bell tower; the government supported the former with 80 million forints and the latter with 18 million forints,” he said.
Miklós Soltész pointed out that the example in Velence is not unique; throughout the Carpathian Basin, 3,800 churches have been renovated, and another 200 have been built.
According to him, the churches’ “constructive work beyond faith” is also significant; by maintaining schools and social institutions, they contribute to the preservation of Christian values.
Zoltán Tessely (Fidesz), the region’s member of parliament, emphasized: “We must believe that we did not witness Lazarus’s resurrection, and if we believe, then we can preserve the trinity of God, homeland, and family,” which also serves as the foundation of their political family.
Parish priest Norbert Récsei said during Mass that work on the church began in 2024.
Parishioners contributed 12 million forints and the local government 10 million forints to fund the complete renovation of the church interior and the reinforcement of the tower.

The Roman Catholic Church of St. Stephen was built between 1827 and 1830 in the Neoclassical style. The single-nave church, featuring a tower on its façade, is believed by some to have been designed by József Hild. It is a listed historic building.
