Half of Hungarians have already started or plan to start their Christmas shopping in November, while a third plan to do so in the first half of December, according to a representative survey by Yettel, that examined Hungarians’ gift-giving habits. This year, Hungarians are expected to spend slightly less on Christmas than last year. Based on the survey results, the proportion of those planning to spend more has decreased, and the number of people giving gifts to their extended families has also dropped.
The average amount spent on gifts this year is 75,000 forints (195 euros euros), which is less than last year’s 77,000 forints (200 euros) in real terms. The proportion of those intending to spend larger amounts has decreased, with 45 percent of families planning to spend less than 50,000 forints (130 euros), and only two out of ten exceeding the 100,000 forint limit (260 euros).
The proportion of those who do not buy gifts at all has increased, mostly for financial reasons (25 percent) or because they never give gifts (33 percent).
The average number of people planned to receive gifts has also decreased, from 5.8 to 5.4, although gifts are still more likely to be bought for children and grandchildren.
Younger people under the age of 30 and women give gifts to more people than older people and men. Most people surprise their partner or spouse (59 percent), followed by children (55 percent) and parents (48 percent). Fewer people are giving gifts to distant relatives this year, but giving gifts to friends is still on the list for a fifth of those celebrating.
The popularity of experience gifts has declined (from 22 percent to 16 percent), with practical solutions coming to the fore. The most popular gifts this year are:
- clothing (46 percent)
- toys (39 percent)
- and electronic devices (34 percent).
As these items have all become somewhat more expensive, fewer gifts are likely to be purchased with the Christmas budget.
The most important factors when buying gifts are personalization (58 percent), usefulness (47 percent), and reasonable price (35 percent). The importance of unique (from 17 to 23 percent) and sustainable (from 6 to 10 percent) gifts has increased, especially among 18- to 29-year-olds.
It is interesting to note that the majority of Hungarians would like to receive a surprise (56 percent), but about the same number would be happy if they knew in advance what they were going to get (55 percent).
The survey results reveal that the biggest challenges for Hungarians are choosing gifts and Christmas expenses. Women and those in their thirties often cite time constraints as a problem. When it comes to reducing holiday spending, most would cut back on entertainment (37 percent), decorations (29 percent), and travel (29 percent). One-fifth of respondents would also cut back on spending on sweets, cakes, gifts, and Christmas trees, a quarter would cut back on other items, while one in ten would reconsider their monthly expenses.
