MOL has released new information regarding the restoration of its chemical plant in Tiszaújváros that was damaged in an explosion last Friday. While the immediate risk of further accidents has been eliminated, production at the affected Olefin-1 plant will not resume for several months.
The official on-site investigation at the Olefin-1 plant, damaged in the May 22 explosion at MOL’s polyol plant, has been completed, and the immediate risk of an accident has also been eliminated. MOL has received the official permits necessary to begin restoration and has assembled a team of experts responsible for the work. The safe removal of hydrocarbons from the plant is still underway, Világgazdaság reports, citing a statement from the Hungarian oil company made Wednesday.
Preparations for the restoration will begin with cleaning the plant, followed by the scaffolding and technical inspection of the equipment and pipelines affected by the incident, as well as the steel and reinforced concrete structures. The damaged components will be dismantled, and the company will immediately begin procuring the equipment necessary for the restoration.
“Following the technical inspection of the damaged equipment, we will have a more accurate picture of how long the restoration will take. Based on preliminary expert estimates, operations can resume after several months of work,” MOL’s statement emphasizes.

The condition of the employees injured in the accident is steadily improving, but they still require hospital treatment.
One person lost their life in the explosion, and nine others were injured. MOL is providing full support to those affected and their families, the statement notes.
Hungary’s fuel supply has not been affected by the industrial accident, and MOL is cooperating fully with the authorities, the company added.
In its flash analysis, Erste Bank estimated that given the current strong margins, the accident could reduce annual profit by approximately $100–150 million, depending on the duration of the recovery, while direct damages could reach $100 million, at least part of which may be covered by insurance. That said, they believed that although this is a serious incident overall, the accident in Tiszaújváros will only have a limited impact on the fair value of MOL’s shares.
