A four-member consortium led by Hungary’s EuroAszfalt is playing a key role in completing a section of the North Transylvanian motorway that has been left unfinished since 2013. The four company leaders told Magyar Építők that professional considerations prevail over national prejudices in the project.
A motorway investment of historical significance is currently underway in Transylvania, near the Hungarian–Romanian border. The Suplacu de Barcău–Chiribiș section in Bihor County is a long-abandoned project: since the withdrawal of the original contractor, the American Bechtel, in 2013, several companies have signed contracts for its continuation, but completion efforts repeatedly failed. Meanwhile, the project is considered crucial because the Bihor sections of the North Transylvanian A3 motorway, and together with other ongoing segments, could be completed within a few years.
As a result, the A3 will eventually create a continuous high-speed road connection from the Hungarian border to Szeklerland in Transylvania, also serving several Hungarian-inhabited regions along the route.
The long-awaited completion of the development is also regarded as a milestone because Romanian and Hungarian construction companies have taken leading roles in this nationally significant project.
The general contractor, Erbașu Transilvania SA, a Romanian family-owned construction company, commissioned a four-member consortium as subcontractors. The bulk of the work is being carried out by Hungarian companies EuroAszfalt Ltd., Kelet Út Ltd., and Albert Bau Ltd., along with the Romanian-based Hungarian company Metal Hammer Bau SRL, on a 26.35-kilometer section.
Construction industry news site Magyar Építők spoke with the leaders of the four companies at EuroAszfalt’s Budapest headquarters about the significance and challenges of the Romanian–Hungarian project. Erbașu, the general contractor, is primarily active in building construction but has increasingly expanded into infrastructure in recent years. Winning and successfully executing this project represents an important step in that expansion.
Romania’s road construction sector has experienced significant growth due to multiple large-scale projects. Taking advantage of this opportunity, and through personal connections and knowledge of Hungarian references, Erbașu requested bids from EuroAszfalt for asphalt works. The Hungarian company was also recommended by Metal Hammer Bau and Albert Bau as experienced contractors. After reviewing the proposal, the Erbașu delegation visited Hungary to assess capacity and expressed full satisfaction.
The four companies ultimately signed a contract within a consortium led by EuroAszfalt.
Each partner has defined responsibilities: EuroAszfalt handles asphalt works, Albert Bau performs part of the earthworks, Kelet Út is responsible for water engineering and additional earthworks, while Metal Hammer Bau carries out structural works for engineering structures.
The company leaders unanimously stressed that Erbașu has long cooperated with Metal Hammer Bau and that it placed trust in a Hungarian-led consortium. They described this as an exemplary Romanian–Hungarian collaboration, rising above national prejudice and driven by professional and human considerations rather than political ones.
Based on experience since the project restarted in 2025, the participants reported exemplary cooperation between the Romanian general contractor and the Hungarian firms. They also indicated that
they are already in discussions regarding another motorway project, which Erbașu is also likely to win.
They added that this is significant because Romania’s ongoing infrastructure expansion is expected to continue, supported by substantial EU funding. The partners also mentioned plans to compete internationally as a joint consortium in the future.
From EuroAszfalt’s perspective, managing director Attila Bakó highlighted that successful Romanian motorway projects could open new opportunities and markets. He said the company aims to demonstrate its capabilities abroad while maintaining domestic production and growth.
Albert Bau’s managing director emphasized that long-standing market knowledge and relationships were key in forming the partnership. He noted his experience working in both Romania and Hungary and the importance of understanding both professional cultures.
The head of Metal Hammer Bau stressed the value of established trust and business relationships, while Kelet Út’s leadership pointed to extensive international experience in Bulgaria, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic, alongside earlier work in Romania. All participants agreed that the project demonstrates how trust, experience, and cooperation can outweigh national differences in large-scale infrastructure development.
