    At 5 a.m. today, Romanian authorities and bailiffs broke through the centuries-old wall of the Premonstratensian monastery in Oradea (Nagyvárad) and began evicting Abbot Rudolf Anzelm Fejes.

    The surprise dawn operation followed a previous postponed attempt, when bailiffs had retreated in the face of resistance from local Hungarian faithful. The move has effectively barred the Hungarian Catholic community from celebrating Mass in their 300-year-old church, with even the sacristy now under occupation.  László Toroczkai, leader of Mi Hazánk (Our Homeland) party who has been actively supporting the community, strongly condemned the action as a betrayal. In a statement issued shortly after the raid, he criticized the Hungarian government and Foreign Minister Anita Orbán for failing to respond to his open letter calling for diplomatic intervention, noted the lack of action despite earlier promises by Péter Magyar, and accused the RMDSZ of assisting the Romanian authorities. Toroczkai described the events as a clear betrayal of the Hungarian minority in Transylvania.
    The politician wrote:

    “The last time (when I was on site again), the bailiffs did not dare to come at the announced time due to resistance from the Hungarian faithful in Oradea. So this time, at dawn, unexpectedly, after breaking through the wall, the Romanian authorities forcibly entered the historic building.

    Meanwhile, for the past 11 days, I have been waiting for a response from Foreign Minister Anita Orbán to my open letter, in which I asked the Hungarian government to take action and for Anita Orbán to summon the Romanian ambassador.

    For 11 days, she has not even deigned to respond to this request. But not only has the Hungarian government done nothing (despite Péter Magyar’s promise), but the RMDSZ (Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania – editor’s note) also assisted in what happened early this morning. This is indeed a betrayal!

    The Hungarian community in Oradea can no longer even hold Mass in their 300-year-old iconic church, now that even the sacristy has been occupied.”

    Fact

    The abbey, with origins dating back to the 12th century and re-established in the 19th century, has been at the center of a legal battle with the Oradea municipality. City authorities claim ownership of parts of the monastic complex — including rooms adjacent to the state-run Mihai Eminescu High School — and seek to evict Abbot Rudolf Anzelm Fejes to facilitate renovations, arguing the buildings are municipal property. The Premonstratensian Order and the abbot maintain that the monastery and church form an integral part of recognized ecclesiastical property belonging to the Order, which enjoys legal personality under Romanian law. A lower court ruled in favor of eviction in January 2026, leading to multiple enforcement attempts.
