    In a study published in the journal Acta Psychologica, researchers examined how smartphone use is related to mental and physical health and cognitive functioning in university students aged 18-35.

    The results showed that neuroticism—the tendency toward anxiety and negative emotions—does not in itself lead to addiction; the decisive factor is how well someone is able to control their own behavior, emotions, and impulses.

    The study divided participants into three groups: “social” users who focused exclusively on social interaction, moderate content consumers, and “heavy process-oriented” users who spent more than four to five hours a day scrolling.

    The latter group experienced cognitive decline, memory impairment, attention and sleep disorders. “The most important finding of our research is that personality (i.e., a high score on the neuroticism scale) alone does not make anyone addicted to their phone. In other words, it is not the case that those who are prone to negative emotions, anxiety, depression, and stress will inevitably become addicted—the decisive factor is how well they can control their own behavior, emotions, and impulses, and how much they fear missing out on something,” emphasized Johanna Takács, senior research fellow at the Faculty of Health Sciences at Semmelweis University and head of the research, in the announcement.

    As the research confirms, it is not the amount of time spent on the phone that is the biggest problem, but how and what we use the phone for.

    If someone mainly scrolls passively through social media, their brain is exposed to constant, rapid stimuli, which exhausts their attention, impairs their concentration, and can cause mental strain in the long term.

    The research also warns of physical consequences.

    According to expert Beáta Seregély, constantly leaning your head forward (known as “text neck”) can not only lead to joint wear and tear, but also cause balance problems, as the nerve endings in the neck send altered signals to the brain.

    Experts say, the solution lies not in prohibition, but in awareness.

    Researchers recommend setting reasonable notifications, setting time limits for social media, getting more exercise, and using behavioral training to develop self-control in order to prevent addiction.
