Conceptual design for the renovation of Örs vezér Square
Major public space development projects are set to begin in Budapest, targeting both the downtown area and one of the city’s busiest transit hubs. The plans focus on transforming Madách Square and Örs vezér Square into greener, more livable, and more functional urban spaces, Építészfórum reports.
Work around Madách Square can officially begin, as the Erzsébetváros Municipality handed over the construction site on Wednesday. The project includes a full reconstruction of Madách Imre Road between Rumbach Sebestyén Street and Asbóth Street. The goal is to create a safer, more accessible streetscape by leveling the roadway with the sidewalks, installing new paving, and redesigning the intersection at Rumbach Sebestyén Street to meet accessibility standards.
The project also includes planting 15 new trees and expanding green space by roughly 1,700 square feet. Existing potted trees will be relocated within the district.
Construction will take place in two phases and is expected to be completed within about 120 days.
The plans were designed by Anikó Imecs and Gábor Karádi of Táj-Consult.

Simultaneously, András Rózsa, mayor of Budapest’s 14th district, announced the long-awaited redevelopment of Örs vezér Square on Wednesday. The project aims to create a more organized, safer, and better-functioning transit and community space used by tens of thousands of people every day.
Despite challenges posed by the extensive utility infrastructure beneath the square, the redesign is expected to deliver a clearer and easier-to-navigate environment.
Initial changes could be visible as early as this summer, with the full project rolling out in phases.

Under the proposal, green space will be introduced not as a traditional park but through landscaped areas at varying elevations, making the space both greener and easier to navigate for pedestrians. Updated paving and the removal of barriers will improve connections between suburban rail (HÉV), public transit stops, and nearby destinations such as Sugár Shopping Center and IKEA. Removing the row of pavilions next to the shopping center will open up the square, while bike routes will become continuous.
Additional features include a new centrally located drinking fountain that will serve as a meeting point and could later host a public art installation. The existing public safety point will remain, supplemented with fixed seating, and a new, easily accessible public restroom will be built at one end of the square.
