The current status of the investigation into the Ukrainian gold convoy—under this title, the National Tax and Customs Administration (NAV) issued a statement on Wednesday morning to ensure accurate information and counter the spread of false claims.
Regarding the cash transported by the Ukrainian convoy, financial investigators determined the following:
The armored cash transport vehicles contained exclusively freshly printed banknotes (euros and dollars) that had not yet been put into circulation. The euro banknotes were printed by the Italian Central Bank. In addition to the Ukrainian Oschadbank, a Polish bank and a bank from Gibraltar are also involved in the transports.
NAV announced that it had submitted a request to the Office of the Attorney General, which oversees the legality of the investigations, for a European investigation in the Republic of Austria and the Republic of Poland.
In the course of the investigation, several indications have emerged that the background of the Ukrainian money transport through Hungary is unclear and that the origin and use of the $40 million and €35 million in cash, as well as nine kilograms of gold bars transported in the armored vehicle could also point to a criminal offense.
This is also corroborated by a video recording that NAV has now released in full. The recording shows the former major general of the Ukrainian secret service, who is suspected of being responsible for the money transports, forging documents in the restroom of a gas station during the transport, while his accomplices discuss corrupt funds.
Finally, NAV rejected the allegations made in the press that the investigative authority had not acted in accordance with the law during the criminal proceedings. “A video recording was made of every step of the investigation, which is being handled by the authority within the framework of the proceedings in accordance with applicable legal provisions,” the statement reads.
