On Tuesday, the final day of the qualifying tournament in Istanbul, the Hungarian women’s national basketball team defeated the Turkish hosts 89–74. With this victory, they managed to qualify for the World Cup taking place in Berlin in September. This marks their return to the World Cup after a 28-year hiatus.
The team, led by national coach Péter Völgyi, began the 2024 World Cup qualifying series in August, winning the preliminary round in Rwanda.
Qualification could have been secured on Sunday, when they defeated Argentina 92-81 in overtime. However, the Canadians suffered a surprise loss to previously winless Japan, meaning Hungary’s World Cup berth would not be decided until Tuesday, the final day of play. The Hungarians had no luck in the afternoon either, as both the Australian and Japanese national teams won; otherwise, Völgyi’s team could have celebrated at that point.
The decision ultimately came down to the tournament’s final game: the Hungarian team needed a win to qualify for the World Cup, while the Turkish team had already secured their place.
The record of previous encounters offered little cause for optimism, as the Hungarians had won only one of the five previous meetings between the two teams, and that was back in the 1988 Olympic qualifiers. Most recently, in June 2023, the opponent proved to be the better team at the European Championship in Slovenia with a 69-68 victory—though the Red-White-Greens went on to finish in the fourth place.
In the game against the Turkish, the Hungarians showed no signs of the enormous pressure. They led almost throughout the first quarter.
As the game progressed, the hosts stepped up their pace and were ahead by one or two points, but then the Hungarian team pulled ahead by ten points (50–40). At halftime, the score was 52–41.

After the break, the opponent closed the gap with a 6–0 run, but shortly thereafter the lead grew again to 14 points. In the final stretch that began with the score at 66-52, the home team scored seven points in half a minute, but the Hungarians remained composed, patiently building their attacks.
With four and a half minutes remaining, the visitors held a 16-point lead, ultimately finishing the tournament in second place in their group and qualifying for the World Cup for the first time in 28 years.
From the six-team group in Istanbul, in addition to Australia—that had already qualified as continental champion—three other teams—Hungary, Türkiye, and Japan—have qualified for the World Cup, to be held September 4–13 in Berlin, where the world’s top 16 teams will compete. The group draw for the World Cup in Berlin will take place on April 21.
“It has been a long time since Hungarian basketball has seen such a result. Based on what I have seen here, I am optimistic about the future.
We had a very tough time today, because previously four games could have gone a way that would have qualified us – that is mentally hard to process.
We will prepare for the World Cup, give it our best, and we are certainly in for some tough opponents,” national team coach Völgyi told M4 Sport.
The Hungarian women’s national team can now prepare for its sixth World Cup. Hungary last finished in tenth place in 1998. Their best finish to date was fifth place, achieved in Rio de Janeiro in 1957.
