Explosive ordnance disposal teams received nearly 70 percent more reports of discovered explosive devices compared to last year due to low water levels in lakes and rivers, the Hungarian Defense Forces’ 1st Explosive Ordnance Disposal and River Flotilla Regiment “Honvéd” announced on its Facebook page on Thursday.
Due to the prolonged lack of rainfall and the resulting low water levels, numerous explosive devices that were previously hidden underwater or in the debris and sediment along the shoreline have become visible and accessible, leading to a significant increase in the number of reports received by the bomb squad.
Based on the report, between January 1 and August 24, the hotline received 410 urgent reports requiring immediate action and 1,006 “regular” reports.
In July, 253 reports were received, of which 112 required urgent action; 19 of these came from locations in Budapest, and 93 from outside the city.
Of the reports not requiring urgent action, 129 came from outside Budapest and 12 from Budapest. Nearly 41 percent of the reports—103 in total—came from areas along the Danube that had previously been underwater and had become accessible due to low water levels.

Between August 1 and 24, 1.3 times as many reports were received as in the previous month—a total of 337—of which 145 required urgent action and 192 were classified as “normal”; however, the majority of reports in both categories came from rural areas. In the urgent category, the number of reports from Budapest and rural areas was 54 and 91, respectively, while in the “B” category, it was 8 and 192.
So far in August, there have been 195 reports from locations along the Danube, accounting for nearly 58 percent of all August reports.
During these nearly two months, 590 reports were received by the emergency dispatch center, of which 298 were from the Danube area—meaning 50.5 percent of the reports came from along the river.
Last year, during the July–August period, the average number of daily reports was five; over those two months, 288 reports were received, 55 of which were urgent.
This means that, compared to last year, the total number of reports increased by nearly 70 percent during this period, while the number of urgent reports more than tripled.
While last year one in five reports was urgent, this year it is already more than one in three. Based on the summary, an extremely high number of reports were received during the first four days of August: 28 on August 1, 35 on August 2, 28 on August 3, and 32 on August 4.
The types and quantities of explosive ordnance recovered are extremely varied: 214 mortar shells, 433 artillery shells, 99 hand grenades, 42 bombs, 30 landmines, 9,112 rounds of small arms ammunition, and 382 “non-explosive objects” were recovered. The area scanned by equipment covered more than 325,000 square meters, which, for comparison, is approximately 70 percent of Vatican City. From January 1 through August 24, bomb disposal experts destroyed 242,318 explosive devices—nearly 20 metric tons—in 327 controlled detonations, according to the report.
