A passenger ship carrying 240 people vanished from contact in the Java Sea on Sunday, triggering an urgent search as Indonesian crews raced to locate the vessel.

Authorities said the vessel was last tracked roughly 92 miles from a pier in Banjarmasin, the capital of South Kalimantan province.
