Through the story of a French cultural attaché’s years spent in Hungary, the Kiscelli Museum’s new exhibition—which opened on Tuesday under the title The Diplomat: Culture During the Cold War—Guy Turbet-Delof in Budapest (1947–1958)—presents the state of culture and the arts during the first decade of the Cold War.
The exhibition features works by artists whose careers were intertwined with Guy Turbet-Delof’s activities: in addition to several large-scale paintings and smaller graphic works by Endre Rozsda, the exhibition also includes sculptures and sculptural designs by Lajos Barta, as well as works by Béla Czóbel, Tibor Vilt, Márk Vedres, and Géza Gorka.
Guy Turbet-Delof worked as a language teacher in Hungary from 1947, then served as a cultural attaché from 1950 to 1958, while also serving as director of the French Institute in Budapest. He served as a link to the West for countless Hungarian artists, as he forwarded letters via diplomatic mail, procured paintbrushes for the artists, and even transported Endre Rozsa’s paintings to Vienna in his own car.
The Hungarian state security services monitored the diplomat throughout his stay in Budapest, so this exhibition juxtaposes two starkly different legacies:
one shaped by friendship and trust, the other by suspicion and surveillance.
Jonathan Lacote, France’s ambassador to Hungary, spoke at the opening about how Guy Turbet-Delof lived during an era when fostering Franco-Hungarian relations required perseverance, “keen judgment,” and sometimes even courage.
László Csorba, Director General of the Budapest History Museum (BTM), stated that the exhibition pays tribute to and expresses gratitude to “this outstanding French friend of Hungarian artists.”
At a press event held prior to the opening, the curators, Mária Árvai and Blanka Fábián, explained that the French cultural diplomat—whose role was to promote and disseminate French culture—got to know a great many Hungarian artists and helped many of them, going far beyond the scope of his official duties.
Turbet-Delof, at times using the secure communication channels—diplomatic mail and courier bags—for unofficial purposes, strove to help Hungarian intellectuals living in isolation maintain contact with the West, they added.

The exhibition, created to mark the 70th anniversary of the 1956 Revolution, presents Guy Turbet-Delof’s activities in Hungary from several perspectives, including those of the Hungarian visual artists with whom he came into contact. The curators noted that it also explores the perspectives of French diplomacy and the hostile Hungarian political police, as well as Turbet-Delof’s own viewpoint, shaped by his literary education and worldview.
The exhibition features a tapestry commissioned by the French government based on Endre Rozsa’s work Initiation, which was later installed at the French ambassador’s residence in Budapest, a fragment of the Stalin statue toppled in City Park in 1956, and Béla Czóbel’s work Still Life with Pipe and Blue Jug, as the curators emphasized.
In addition to the artworks gifted to the diplomat and works by artists associated with him, the exhibition also features equipment used by the Hungarian political police for surveillance—such as surveillance photos and transcripts—as well as video interviews recounting personal stories.

The vast majority of the works that came into the possession of the French cultural diplomat were donated to the Budapest Art Gallery by his daughter, Christine Turbet-Delof, the curators explained.
The exhibition will be open to the public from Wednesday through February 28, 2027.
