Nobel Prize-winning physicist Ferenc Krausz resigned on Saturday from his membership in the Hungarian Corvin Chain Council and from the Corvin Chain, which recognizes excellence in Hungarian science, literature, and the arts, reported Magyar Nemzet. This will not only come as a serious embarrassment to the Corvin Chain, but will also likely cause a major international reputational damage to the TISZA government.
In response to an inquiry from the Telex news portal, Ferenc Krausz wrote that the main reason for his decision was that there is a significant discrepancy between the Corvin Chain’s actual operations and the role that, in his opinion, such a prestigious community should play in important public, scientific, and ethical matters.

“A painful—though just one—example of this for me is the Élvonal Foundation affair,” added the physicist, who, according to Telex, also took issue with the fact that the body did not stand by him when he initiated a call to speak out against a Russian attack on a children’s hospital in Ukraine.
Despite the crucial role it was supposed to play in developing domestic talent, one of the first decisions of the Péter Magyar government was to dismantled the Élvonal Foundation with immediate effect.
I would like to live to see the day when Hungary becomes a country where people dare to openly declare—on any issue—that they support someone or something. And where current and future Nobel laureates do not leave, but come home,”
wrote Ferenc Krausz back in May in an open letter addressed to Péter Magyar. This after the new prime minister had announced that, among its first measures, his government would terminate the 261.7 billion forint (EUR 592 million) contract with the Élvonal Foundation, led by Ferenc Krausz, and reclaim the 22.4 billion forint (EUR 61 million) already paid out.
The foundation would have used the funds to create a research environment competitive by international standards for at least 25 internationally recognized, world-class researchers and approximately fifty exceptionally talented young researchers, and would also have established a nationwide talent development system. Following the prime minister’s announcement, the board of trustees of the Élvonal Foundation held an emergency meeting and approved a letter addressed to Péter Magyar, in which they initiated a dialogue with the prime minister and emphasized that talent development is in Hungary’s national and societal interest.
In his open letter at the time, Ferenc Krausz also wrote that he had only learned from social media that the government was terminating their contract.

According to a controversial government decree signed by Péter Magyar, a number of public-interest asset management foundations (KEKVA) were dissolved as of July 31. According to the list, in addition to the Élvonal Foundation for Cutting-Edge Research and Talent Development, the following were also dissolved:
The Land of the Future Generation Foundation,
The MOL – New Europe Foundation,
The Hauszmann Foundation,
The Central European Educational Foundation,
the Millenáris Scientific and Cultural Foundation,
the Lajos Batthyány Foundation,
the Mathias Corvinus Collegium,
the Blue Planet Climate Protection Foundation,
the Makovecz Campus Foundation,
the Knowledge-Space Foundation,
The Foundation for the Research of Central and Eastern European History and Society,
The Foundation for the Preservation of Central European Built Heritage,
The Foundation for Hungarian Culture,
The Educational, Cultural, and Scientific Foundation for Civic Enrichment,
The ZalaZONE Foundation.
In a statement, the opposition party FIDESZ condemned the dismantling of the foundation and the media campaign carried out by the liberal pro-government press. They explained: “In addition to supporting Nobel Prize nominee Botond Roska, the foundation undertook to nurture 55,000 young talents, support 15 new international patents and innovative Hungarian enterprises, and build a new research and preventive healthcare center. Under the agreement, the possibility of securing additional funding—in the case of performance-based commitments—would have arisen only after six years.”
“The dismantling of the Élvonal Foundation will cause serious damage to Hungary and the Hungarian scientific and research community
—wrote the opposition party’s parliamentary caucus in a statement, which considers “the incitement of hostility toward Hungarian scientists and our Nobel laureates” to be unacceptable.

The Corvin Chain award was established in 1930 by Regent Miklós Horthy, based on an idea by Kunó Klebelsberg, Minister of Religion and Public Education. The award was reinstated in 2001 during the first Orbán government. The Corvin Chain Committee is chaired by Prof. E. Sylvester Vizi, a physician and former president of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Recent Nobel laureate Katalin Karikó is also among its members.
