The Hungarian transmission system operator Mavir Zrt. has lifted the classification of the electricity supply as a crisis situation. The reason for lifting the alert is the full reconnection of the Paks nuclear power plant to the grid. As Minister of Economy and Energy István Kapitány confirmed, all four reactor units are now once again operating at full capacity.
Just under a month ago, the situation had deteriorated dramatically. Due to persistent drought and extremely low water levels in the Danube, the flow rates were no longer sufficient to cool the reactors in accordance with regulations. The operators were forced to gradually reduce the plant’s output to nearly zero.
The fact that the situation has now normalized faster than expected is due to two factors.
In addition to a slight increase in inflows into the riverbed, an emergency structural measure in particular proved effective. A temporary sill constructed near the power plant dams up the Danube water to such an extent that the intake of cooling water is once again fully guaranteed.
The construction project, originally scheduled to take one month, is progressing faster than planned. It is intended to guarantee a stable minimum water level even during future heat waves and droughts—a necessary precaution in light of long-term climate forecasts, which continue to predict low water levels for the region. Another drop in the water level is already forecast for Thursday.
The return to full capacity occurred more quickly than predicted. While Prime Minister Péter Magyar had indicated that the plant would resume operations on Wednesday, it had already reached nearly its maximum capacity by Tuesday at noon.
Around 2:00 p.m., the power plant fed approximately 1,700 megawatts into the grid, which, under real operating conditions, corresponds to the practical full capacity of the 2,000-MW nuclear power plant (approx. 1,800 MW).
No widespread blackout occurred during the outage. As Világgazdaság reported, the responsible energy suppliers made up for the shortfall by importing electricity from neighboring European countries and by ramping up domestic backup power plants. Hungary’s interconnected grid proved to be robust and flexible.
Optimal weather conditions provided additional relief. Intense sunshine led to peak solar power generation, while recently installed industrial battery storage systems helped to balance out frequency fluctuations in the grid. Market observers therefore emphasize that the actual impact on supply security was less severe than had been feared beforehand.
Despite the current easing of tensions, the debate over the cooling of the nuclear power plant has flared up again.
At the center of the criticism is the planned expansion through the Paks II project. While proponents point to modern flow-through and safety concepts, critics and concerned segments of the population continue to call for the construction of traditional concrete cooling towers to permanently minimize dependence on the fluctuating water level of the Danube.
