After more than a decade of being unofficially blacklisted by Chicago-area venues, Chief Keef finally returned Wednesday to his hometown. But while the ambition was there, the execution was not, as his homecoming show fell short of the sky-high expectations for the drill rapper’s return.

Originally scheduled for Sept. 12, the concert was one of the most anticipated moments in Chicago hip-hop history, with Keef kicking off his headlining national tour in Chicago. At the last minute, the concert was postponed due to “travel delays,” which he did not address at all during the sold-out show at Huntington Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island.

Anticipation was high as the crowd eagerly awaited his arrival on stage. After fans were treated to footage of Sosa backstage taking pictures and being with his friends and family, he finally appeared on stage to the heroic introduction, “B–- Where.” With rapper and cousin Ballout at his side, you could see the joy across his pearly white teeth as he performed, seemingly happy to be home, even if he didn’t say much about what it meant to have his first performance inside city limits after over a decade.

The evening had a party vibe. Chief Keef, who has never been one to do a lot of talking on stage, let the music speak for him, dancing and keeping the party vibe going while his friends and family rocked the stage. And that was the main flaw of Keef's homecoming — his entourage and special guests stole the show.

Chance the Rapper’s brief cameo midshow was certainly a welcome surprise. When he appeared on stage to perform his signature hit, “No Problem,” it was refreshing; his energy and commanding voice were among the night’s most electrifying moments. Despite being in separate circles due to their contrasting styles and lanes within Chicago hip-hop, the two have always been friends and supporters of each other. Watching them embrace on stage was a rare moment that showed the kinship between two of the most consequential rappers from the South Side of their generation.

As Chief Keef gets older and aims for a higher level in his career, it's time to do away with having tons of people on stage. When he did this previously, including at this year’s Summer Smash, it worked because everyone on stage had infectious energy that amped up the crowd. However, the people on stage with him lacked that same intensity and were all standing around, except for Chicago rappers Ballout, Tadoe and DooWop, who gave the most effort.

His cousins Ballout and Tadoe were the MVPs of the night. Their experience from performing on stage with Sosa over the years showed up in their timing, energy and overall chemistry as they rapped every word of his songs. They carried the show while Keef spent most of the evening dancing around.

The band added an extra edge of angst to Keef’s early hits “Love Sosa” and “I Don’t Like,” which sounded like it should be performed at a future Super Bowl halftime show. Guitarist Johnny Rayburn’s ripping riffs on the “I Don’t Like” performance added a funky, exciting new layer. They should’ve performed during the entire set, rather than just some of the songs.

There’s a disconnect between Keef’s stage presence and the aggressive, hype nature of his music. Songs like the closing “Faneto” and “I Don’t Like” require the same type of rage and recklessness as they had when Keef was a breakout rapper in his teens; his vibe now is more relaxed, loose and whimsical. That playfulness in some of his movements on stage, like when he grabbed the stage wires and hung on to them, showed a different side of Keef that’s buried underneath his hardened exterior.

Chief Keef stuck to the hits for the most part. Hearing anthems like “Bang,” “Hadouken” and “Faneto,” while throwing in deep cuts like “Kills” and “Understand Me,” was everything the fans wanted and needed. But it was disappointing not to have anything from his new album “Skeletor,” which shows him at his clearest, funniest and most poignant lyrically, while a booming soundscape shows off his chops as a producer. I would have loved to have seen him do songs like “Breaking Down,” “The Real Chief Keef,” “Slide” and “Harry Potter” with a live band.

Watching Chief Keef for nearly two hours is a different experience than seeing him perform a shorter set at a festival. And while I pray that he makes a historic return to Lollapalooza next year (because he deserves it), he still has more room to grow as a performer if he’s looking to headline Soldier Field like fellow Chi-Town legend ‘Ye in the near future.

Chief Keef set list for Sept. 23, 2026 show at Huntington Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island

B–– Where
Bang
Monster
Everyday
I Don't Know Dem
True Religion Fein
Save That S–
I Don't Like
No Tomorrow
Kay Kay
Ballin'
Understand Me
Hate Being Sober
Citgo
Love Sosa
Save Me
Close That Door
Love No Thotties
Been Ballin (Ballout ft.
