Olivia Rodrigo can clearly buy herself flowers. A lot of them.
On Sunday night, the celebrated singer-songwriter drowned her horseshoe-shaped stage at the United Center with thousands of pink and white stems, probably enough to give one to every fan at the sold-out show. She did for a lucky few as she frolicked around the arena, including doling one out to singer Halsey, who was conspicuously tucked into the crowd.
All were purportedly fake bulbs, even though the stadium still somehow smelled like a floral shop. And the voluminous props required a road crew of a dozen-plus to fluff and dismantle them throughout each act of the two-hour show. Grandiose? Sure. But it was one of the prettiest transformations of 1901 W. Madison St., serving a larger purpose than just making the arena look like a live-action perfume ad.
Coming off the massive success of the inaugural Daisy Chain Fields Music Festival in August — Rodrigo’s modern take on Lilith Fair that raised $20 million for women’s and girls’ causes — the music scion has kept the flower power going on her Unraveled Tour. It’s a production that puts femininity and growth at its core, where flowers are both a symbol of love and recognized as the automatic gift that comes at many different life stages.
For the purpose of this tour — promoting Rodrigo’s latest album “You Seem Pretty Sad For a Girl So in Love,” released in June — the singer took on the stages of a relationship as it mutates from “honeybees” to “maggots.”
“One of the reasons I’m so proud of [this album] is because I feel like there’s a song on the record for every stage in a relationship,” she explained, describing “Drop Dead” about a first date, “Stupid Song” about being so infatuated you can’t eat or sleep and “Cigarette Smoke” about the resentment you feel after it’s ended.
The six-act performance evoked this story arc, broken into seasons where Rodrigo (and her flowers) “withered and grew” with each new calendar stage. As Rodrigo’s tone changed, the flower crew removed or added bulbs with each turn. She started out confident and boastful in the Spring, where “Drop Dead” and “U + Me = <3” were doe-eyed declarations of young love. But as cracks appeared, “Good 4 U” became Rodrigo’s pungent kiss-off as she stomped through the flower fields in her go-to baby doll dress and pair of Doc Martens.
By Winter, Rodrigo turned inward, splaying her heart out all over the baby grand piano she commanded for stripped-back takes on “Favorite Crime” and “Honeybee.” (Fake) snow even fell from the rafters above her for effect. But as Winter gave way to Spring again (or, Spring 2 in Rodrigo’s world), the snow turned to rain, which “melted” her dress off during “The Cure” to reveal another frock underneath. And before long, Rodrigo was blooming again, declaring herself an “All-American B–-” with a new set of “Expectations.”
The Unraveled Tour is as theatrical as it is narrative-driven, as Rodrigo continues to develop her storytelling muscle on her third album. But it would be remiss not to think of the evolution of Rodrigo herself coded into this production. At 23, the music star has come a long way from the 17-year-old who burst onto the scene with her breakout hit “Drivers License.” Even she took stock of that Sunday night. “I wrote it when I was a very heartbroken teenager,” she said to introduce the emotional performance. “It’s always fun to revisit those songs as a happier adult.”
Beyond musical growth, there’s also personal growth where Rodrigo has taken the platform she’s been given seriously as she’s matured. Like her rock heroes Jack White, Hole and The Cure, she puts an activist bent into everything she does, vouching for causes like voter registration organization Head Count and embedding feminist mantras into more than her songs.
Before she even took the mantle of Daisy Chain Fields Fest, she toured with The Breeders and espoused Alanis Morissette for ushering in this new wave of confessional singer-songwriters (there’s no denying Rodrigo’s “Good 4 U” is the modern-day “You Oughta Know”). She has been a spokesperson for Planned Parenthood and founded her own nonprofit, Fund 4 Good, to support initiatives for women’s health, girls’ education and preventing domestic violence.
On her latest tour, Rodrigo has also tapped an exemplary all-women 10-person backing band who brought out her rocker side on “My Way” and “Serena Joy” while a string section ushered in a softer tone on “Begged” and “Cigarette Smoke.” Each date of the tour has also been opened by varying femme-forward acts — in Chicago, the gig went to British rock band Wolf Alice.
Rodrigo still is one of the hottest tickets in town. But for her and all the young girls who were watching, it’s become more than just a show. It’s about shaping the future long after the curtain has dropped — and for that we need to give Rodrigo her flowers.
